Fall 2015: Saturday Draft League: Kiss the Rings

    3-Peat
Realer Than The Matrix 54 Kiss The Rings 59

    Not one…

    Not two…

But three-straight titles for the Prince!

Just call Harry ‘the Prince’ Lebov the Red Auerbach of the SDL. Seriously. This dude should be able to light up a victory cigar at every SDL Live Draft at Courtside. That is, if he ever shows up for an actual draft!

The Season of the Wolf continued with yet another dominant showing in Kiss the Rings’ 59-54 victory over Realer than the Matrix in the title game. His monster stat-line of 34 points and 22 rebounds earned him MVP honors, but even that wasn’t enough to keep Wolf from complaining after the final horn sounded. Wolf, you guys just won the championship! Go celebrate with your teammates!

Amazingly enough, Kiss the Rings ran the table after a Week 1 loss behind the dominant play of the SDL MVP. Wolf’s resume included an SDL-record 65-point performance in Week 9 and another 55 points the following week.

Wolf notched a double-double in the first half with 18 points and 10 boards as Kiss the Rings held a 27-25-point advantage at the break. Realer than the Matrix relied on a more-balanced attack that saw at least three players score at least seven points, with Tobi Adebanjo leading the way with 9.

Adebanjo led Realer than the Matrix with a team-high 20, while Dan Towne pitched in with 13 points and 12 boards, and Brian Quinn added 12. Billy ‘Action’ Jackson was the only other player on Kiss the Rings to finish in double-figures with 13 points.

The main event of the day was Wolf vs. Towne. They had quite the battle going, and at one point Kap whistled the play dead to calm things down. Hey, it’s the championship game. What else would you expect?

Surprisingly, it was Realer than the Matrix that came out firing as they jumped out to an early 9-3 lead. Quinn especially seemed energized as he scored seven of his 12 points in the first five minutes on a pretty reverse lay-in, a 3-ball and another blow-by score.

Harry found Jackson on a nice backdoor cut and then Jackson added a drive and lefty finish at the rim, but Towne’s first FG of the day – a trey – upped the lead to 20-12 with 10:30 to go in the first.

Wolf had 10 of his team’s first 16, while Tobi was doing work (3-ball, nice step-back J, lefty kiss drive) and Quinn combined for 16 early on.

This thing had it all. Kiss the Rings’ Ryan Halliday was left bloodied after an errant elbow. What’s a championship game without a little blood?

Jackson got his Sherman Douglas on and played floor general as he found a flashing Mike Rousselle for the hoop and then spotted a streaking Wolf for the score in the final seconds of the first half to put Kiss the Rings up 27-25.

Kiss the Rings pushed the lead to five early in the second after a tough Wolf offensive rebound and score that resulted in an And-1, but Realer than the Matrix eventually pulled even six minutes in on a huge hit from deep from their captain, Damian Ruff. The trey, which was Ruff’s first FG of the night, tied things at 39-39.

Kiss the Rings saw Ruff’s hit from deep and responded with a huge 7-0 run to take a 46-39 lead with 11:30 to play. The run featured a Wolf 3-ball, a Rousselle reverse and another Roos score off a nice find from Wolf.

After Ruff hit 2-2 from the line, Kiss the Rings put this thing to bed with a 9-0 run, which included a -surprise, surprise - Harry triple off a Wolf kick-out, a Wolf drive, and a Jackson score off a Wolf outlet.

With their season on the line, down 14, 55-41, with just over four minutes to go, Realer than the Matrix got back-to-back scores from Towne (coast-to-coast a la Barkley) and Tobi (long 3-ball), but Wolf came right back with a drive of his own. Realer than the Matrix closed the game on a 13-4 run, which featured late 3-balls from Quinn and Tobi with under a minute to go, but there was no denying a 3-peat for the Prince.
