Winter 2010: SML League Champs: Cold Blooded

Cold Blooded remains the only champion the SML has ever seen
Tiger Style 63 Cold Blooded 69

The SML has been around for two season’s now, even introducing a new trophy (the Golden 40oz) and have seen an infusion of new talent but one thing remains constant throughout our growth, Cold Blooded is the best and only champion this leagues every seen. It was a valiant effort from Tiger Style but they just couldn’t find an answer for JHend and the rest of the team.

Right from the start JHend (27 pts) was on feeling it. With this being his last game at CAC for the foreseeable future, the man wanted to put on a show and remind everyone who this crafty lefty is.  He was pulling from everywhere on the floor and scoring at will. Despite TS best efforts, they just couldn’t slow him down. Holding a 7 point lead (45-38), it appeared CB had this game in hand but TS wasn’t about to give up and found a way to claw back in the second half. TS made several runs in the second half behind TSmith (17 pts) & Scotty (17 pts) and even cut CB’s lead to 1 (53-52). They had several chances to take the lead and just find a way  to convert. A couple of big shots late from Josh (17 pts) and some late FT’s by captain Nim eventually sealed the deal. Cold Blooded retains their title owning once again the SML and creating a dynasty. They have already committed to next season in an effort to reach legendary status by gaining a 3-peat. For TS, it is yet to be determined if they’re coming back next season but I am sure if they do, once again they’ll be a title contender.

It was another great season for us here in the SML and hopefully next season we see even more new faces and teams as we continue to grow. Thank you to the 10 teams that joined us this season, ref Dan for once again working the league with me and to everyone else who helped out along the way (and you know who you are). This league can’t succeed without you guys and it is my pleasure week in and week out in making this a fun and entertaining league. See you all next season!!

Any Means Necessary 44  The Situation 79

Situation wins opener to get post season rematch with CB

This game was going to be tough for AMN to win with a full roster so things got drastically harder with Steven not present.  Right from the start Situation jumped out early as Caddy (19 pts, 15 reb) set the tone early. He took advantage of the mismatch and his teammates did a great job getting him the ball in the right spots. As always Jim B was all over the place but for the second week in a row struggled from beyond the arc. But I’m sure his 35 points heeled those wounds. AMN couldn’t get anything going offensively and their frustration began to show. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this and it is not a recipe for success, especially against a team like Situation.

The second half didn’t prove any better for AMN as Situation was running a clinic out there. It was great to see my man Billy out there being aggressive and he was rewarded with his best effort of the season scoring 10 points.  With this win, Situation gets their coveted rematch against Cold Blooded (who beat them in the finals) and will look for redemption. This was truly an up and down season for AMN, with the highs being high and lows being real low. Hopefully they come back next season with a more cohesive unit and ready to take on the league.

Cold Blooded begins their title defense in impressive fashion

And so the playoffs begin and what better way to get this tourney started then have our defending champion kick things off. Right from the start a few big stars not on the sidelines for each team. It was expected that Henry would be missing, but JHend and Big Matt was not something I expected. Thankfully both made an appearance shortly after tipoff and the real game could begin. It definitely started out slow with CB holding a 15-13 lead over Hungover in the first 9 min. This game was going back and forth but Hungover was able to jump out to an 8 point half time lead because Morgan (the DPOY) getting to the basket and making his outside shots. He finished 24 pts, and as expected chased JHend (29/7/7) around all game long.

But this is the defending champs and I fully expected them to make a run and they certainly did in the second half. Also as expected JHend led the way and nailed some huge 3’s in the second half. He wasn’t alone though 3 other guys scoring in double figures (Wachtel 13, Chiverton 18 and Nim 12). As CB continued to chip into the lead Big Matt (22 pts, 20 reb) made it difficult to overtake the lead. But with 10 min to go, CB final took their first lead since early in first half. A second run capped by another huge 3 from JHend put CB up 8 and that was enough. With Hungover having to foul late, JHend (really did you expect anyone else) calmly went 12/12 from the line to seal the deal.

It was a great season for Hungover who battled some attendance issues late, but we all expect back next season and anticipate another strong season out of them. Cold Blooded continue’s their title defense of the golden 40oz and move on to the final four.

OCal & Billy who? CACmore marches on with their supporting cast

When word started to leak that O’Cal would not be in attendance, I know this game was going to be a tough one, but when my sources indicated to me that Billy was out as well I openly called for the first round upset. Well I should have known by now that these wily veterans would have something up their sleeves and would find a way to step up. Well they were lead by Filosa (27 pts, 14 reb) and Cheese (29 pts) who just stepped up play after play to lead the way. They weren’t alone though because Mixtape (11pts) dug deep and found ways to contribute with several deflections and was a beast on the glass. But this was close game throughout because TJ can flat out ball and not many can slow him down. TJ (27 pts) once again was getting to the basket or to the line and making shots from deep at will. With a visitor in the balcony, Paul N (12 pts) seemed to struggle to get good looks and forced several shots. However with much of the focus on TJ, Angel (17 pts) had several impressive drives to the basket to help shoulder some of the load. Although Pork Chops kept it tight in the closing minutes, made FT’s by Cheese and Filosa ultimately sealed the deal for CACmore as they advance to the Final Four. Word is Pork Chops is adding another big man to the fold which will make this team tougher and I will expect bigger things out of them next season. As for CACmore, they’re expected to have both O’Cal and Billy back as they continue their journey to the title.

Tiger Style survives a battle with the Cats and advance to the final four

This one was a battle right from the start. Although TS didn’t have the services of GWitz in this one, TSmith (31 pts, 14 reb) was back in the fold and came out with a statement. Although it took him a while to find his stroke, he found other ways to get involved by collecting rebounds and getting into the passing lane. There wasn’t much offense by either club in the first half with the D stepping up big. All shots seemed to be contested no one got any easy looks and points were clearly at a premium. This lead to a low score half, 28-22 TS in the lead, but the pace was where the Cats wanted it.

In the second half the defense continued but guys stepped up to make plays. As expected, the newly crowned MVP Jimmy D was working it from all areas around the basket. His fade away was just unstoppable despite the great defense applied by several TS players. He also got help from Andy who hit several shots from the perimeter. As I mentioned early, TSmith struggled early to hit his shots, but in the second half, he had his stroke going carrying the TS offense. DRuff, who hadn’t hit a 3 all game, hit a big 3 tieing the game at 51 with 3 minutes to go. He then hit an even bigger 3 giving TS a 1 point lead (56-55) with 50 seconds left. The Cats weren’t able to convert on their next possession and it was a FT’s the rest of the way for TS. TSmith and DRuff calmly went 8-8 down the stretch to pull out the hard fought win.

Although I’m sure they’re disappointed, it was another great year from the Cats who hopefully come back next season and continue to search for that title. TS, who played their best defensive game of the year, will need to maintain the same time of defensive intensity as they take on the number one seed for a chance to compete for the Golden 40oz.
