Winter 2010: SML League Champs: Cold Blooded

Cold Blooded remains the only champion the SML has ever seen
Tiger Style 63 Cold Blooded 69

The SML has been around for two season’s now, even introducing a new trophy (the Golden 40oz) and have seen an infusion of new talent but one thing remains constant throughout our growth, Cold Blooded is the best and only champion this leagues every seen. It was a valiant effort from Tiger Style but they just couldn’t find an answer for JHend and the rest of the team.

Right from the start JHend (27 pts) was on feeling it. With this being his last game at CAC for the foreseeable future, the man wanted to put on a show and remind everyone who this crafty lefty is.  He was pulling from everywhere on the floor and scoring at will. Despite TS best efforts, they just couldn’t slow him down. Holding a 7 point lead (45-38), it appeared CB had this game in hand but TS wasn’t about to give up and found a way to claw back in the second half. TS made several runs in the second half behind TSmith (17 pts) & Scotty (17 pts) and even cut CB’s lead to 1 (53-52). They had several chances to take the lead and just find a way  to convert. A couple of big shots late from Josh (17 pts) and some late FT’s by captain Nim eventually sealed the deal. Cold Blooded retains their title owning once again the SML and creating a dynasty. They have already committed to next season in an effort to reach legendary status by gaining a 3-peat. For TS, it is yet to be determined if they’re coming back next season but I am sure if they do, once again they’ll be a title contender.

It was another great season for us here in the SML and hopefully next season we see even more new faces and teams as we continue to grow. Thank you to the 10 teams that joined us this season, ref Dan for once again working the league with me and to everyone else who helped out along the way (and you know who you are). This league can’t succeed without you guys and it is my pleasure week in and week out in making this a fun and entertaining league. See you all next season!!

Cold Blooded 144  Water and Ham 66

Cold Blooded breaks their own recordÖÖbut does it count??????

Itís 9:40 and weíre almost ready to go but weíre waiting on a team to get their 4th. Sure most would assume it was Cold Blodded but believe it or not folks, they were here on time. Water and Ham, short handed for this one, faced the defending champs in a 3 on 3 affair, and quiet honestly, it wasnít even as close as the score says. Right from the start JHend (34/17/8) applied pressure and wanted his guys to run. Chiverton (40/25) looked as strong as last year and Chuilli (27/14) showed off his newly acquired 3 point shot. But the real story for CB was Nim, last years Tommy Award winner. Clearly that honor bestowed upon Nim has elevated his game, because my man dropped the leagues first triple double of the year (43/12/15). What is clear is that the CB offense needs to run through Nim. He is the new star of CB!!!

For W&H it wasnít the start they were looking for. Missing several of their pieces the short handed team just didnít have the horses to keep up with CB. On a positive note for W&H, John C. was real aggressive taking it to the basket and finished with 29 points. Newcomer Jason B (26/20) made six 3ís and will help to keep the lane open for John. Joey, 11 points, at times struggled but I know will turn it around.

W&H faces Hungover next week while CB takes on the auditors from DeLiotte. Oh and league officials have informed me that while 144 pts by CB is impressive, they will continue to recognize their 139 from last year as the record because that was done 4 vs 4.

DeLiotte Globetrotters 46  The Situation 81

The Situation flexes their muscles and shows DeLiotte the real ìSituatuionî

Last seasonís number 1 team got game one, so itís only logical that game 2 would have last seasonís runner up. Well The Situation didnít miss a beat as their big 3, Bobby C (26/10/9), Cadman (27/8) and Jim B (25/8) carried the load and led the way. Newcomer Mike L fit in nicely getting people the rock and Billy continues to do what he does.

DeLiotte, I kept immaculate stat records guys, made their debut and I think they can make some noise in the league. Nick (14/14) is a beast and has some serious man strength. Does the office have a place in a back room for him to chop wood during lunch breaks? Julio carried the offensive load with 19 points (five 3ís) and if they can get a little more help from the rest of the guys watch out. This group is tough, aggressive and hungry.

Things donít get easier for DeLiotte as they go up against the leagues number 1 team Cold Blooded while The Situation will face another new comer Tiger Style.

Any Means Necessary 45  Worcester IceCats 79

Cats play defense by any means necessary.

Game 3 and another team from last season flexed their muscles to the newcomer. But when the Cats flex their muscle it means they play absolute lock down defense, which is exactly what they did. Fresh off his DPOY, Jimmy D owned the paint again altering nearly a dozen shots and blocking two. He also collected 19 boards and found his teammates when they collapsed (10 dimes). Offensively, Foley (26 points) continued his hot outside shooting and JFurg was a beast down low (24/15). It was also nice to see Grif get into the offensive action ending with 15 points. Maybe they should give him the ball more.

AMN looked unsure of what line-ups to go with, and how they need to work together. Sure Evan (12 points) had a few nice drives to the hoop and Charlie (11 pts) found his stroke in the second half, but theyíre going to need to play better as a team to get Wís this season. Iím sure they will work on it accordingly and hopefully things will develop quickly.

Next week, AMN face the squad full of CAC legends and the Cats take on Pork ChopÖ.come hungry.

    Hungover 57  Mount CACmore 65

Shorthanded Hungover canít upset the CAC legends.

This was a great one to watch, a slew of CAC personalities playing Sunday morning for my entertainment and they took on a gritty, but shorthanded Hungover squad. CACmore came out pretty quickly behind some great low post possessions by Filosa (24/15). But Hungover made a run and took a 37-30 half time lead. This run was triggered by Drew (26/19) who was able to get to the rim at will and an unexpected name Jay Leavit. Jay nailed three straight 3ís and really energized the squad.

The second half started off on a 8-0 CACmore run behind the leadership and play making of OíCal. The Stallion (11/9) was getting to the middle of the Hungover defense and found Billy (18/13) and Filosa for easy looks. From that point the game was a back and forth affair, with the lead changing hands on nearly every possession. When the CACmore defense began focusing more on Drew, Morgan (18/12) was able to get some easy looks and keep pace. A few missed late 3ís by Hungover and a couple of CACmore made FTís (8-20 for the game) eventually put the game away. As so eloquently stated by one member of CACmore ìthe only thing we really need to work on are lay-ups and ftísî, and if they can fix those theyíll content for the title. Hungover needs to work on their attendance and would certainly benefit of Henry and Parker in the lineup.

Next week Hungover takes on W&H and CACmore faces AMN.

Tiger Style 79  Pork Chop Sandwiches 54

    Tigerís roar in their debut

Seriously who let me down from the balcony and onto the court? What team is dumb enough to put me on their squad? Well obviously we found that answer and at least for this week I didnít cost this team a win. Thankfully Iíve surrounded myself with enough talent to offset my short comings. In a balanced attack, all 5 members scored in double figures led by marathon man TSmith (22/17). This kid has a motor like no other and is probably still working out since our game. Bernard, who was a little late, still put up 16 points and his aggressive D tallied 4 steals. Scotty (12/10) and DRuff (14/8) played like animals and despite a sluggish first half, Tiger Style was able to lock down and pull away in the second half.

Pork Chops missed a couple of guys from their roster but put up a good fight. Nate (18/16) and Angel (17/5) led the way offensively but theyíll need more scoring from the rest to keep pace with this high scoring league. Itís still early and thereís plenty of time for this team to take shape and build a contender.

Next week Pork Chops take on the boys from Worcester while Tiger Style faces the Situation. Interesting to note is that both teams are from Newton and went to the same high school. Itís classes from the 90ís vs classes from 2000ís.
