Winter 2008: Women’s 4v4 League Champs: Ladies First

Ladies My Mercedes - Ladies First Holds 2 Titles
    Icebox 50 Ladies First 63

With resident Ladies Man BWad (for this past season anyway) watching from the balcony, Ladies First went on a 9-0 run to start the 2nd half and push their slim lead to double digits.  Playoff MVP 'Magic' Johnson ( 22 points, 5 assists) was pushing the pace and finding Ashley (18 points) on the wing to drop bombs.  It was 'only' a 5-12 performance but enough to give Ladies First the extra option they needed to repeat this season.

Their offense wasn't as efficient or as high-powered as they had been the last half of the season, but they had enough to get it done.  Kellie (17 points, 10 boards) added the third fire-breathing orafice in Ladies First's Chimera.  She ended the season with the highest player rater in 4v4 and pulled a Hakeem to the Gripp's (13 points, 5 blocks) David Robinson (come one people, get with it, http://www.hoopsvibe.com/nba/nba-articles/cotd-hakeem-olajuwon-murks-david-robinson-ar46425.html ).  Ok, that was a little mean, as Ladies First clearly had the better team on this night.  Fay (4 points) and LJ (12 boards) didn't score as much as last week, but they did what it took to win.  They played good D on the regular season MVP and they crashed the boards hard.

The Rainmaker (13 points, 6 assists) and Daisy Dukes (12 points, 8 boards) finally started to find the bottom of the well late in the second half, but by then they were down almost 20.  The Nose tossed in 8 points to go along with her defensive prowess.  Speaking of the defense, they played Ladies First as well as anyone had all season long, 10 points below their average isn't anything to sneeze it.  But with Caitlin not hitting a field goal in the second half they weren't able to capitalize.  Ladies First played some good D as well.

Yea, tempers flared down the stretch, but Ladies, remember this is a rec league, there's no need for the excessive trash talk in the league, especially when it's mean spirited, or the retaliation.  The ref will keep the game in hand, there's no need to try and do it yourselves.  Take the high road, talk trash about the team behind their back later that night, or worst case scenario, take it out on O'Cal, he's used to being abused by every woman in his life.  It's only the natural order of things.

Ladies First goes out of the League on top with their second straight Golden Pump.  Each of the three teams that has won the Pump has repeated, now who is next?? Icebox will come back next season with the same squad and will have to be the heavy favorites, especially after starting this past season 9-0.  Will the Summer 08 session be their time?

Its 4:30, Do you know where the girls are?

Very important we get all games started on time, and I have to be honest ladies you have developed a reputation for never being on time!!!  One game delayed throws off the whole schedule.  I don't know what aesthetic arrangements you have to make to play basketball, but whatever they are - get them done earlier so you will be on time!

Note to all husbands/boyfriends in attendance:  It is essential that you introduce yourself to me if you are supporting your significant other!   Such was the case with Mrs. Katie Lombardo - as her newleywed husband Sam stopped by to chat as we were watching the game.  Sam was of course very supportive, but the nuggets of information I was able to pry create a new level of enjoyment while watching the game not since known.  For example:  How could I not chuckle as Sam proudly stated that Big Baby was a banger!  Yes!!! I love this job!

Katie indeed was a banger.  She was the story of the game.   Her 19 pts. 8 rebounds mark season highs.  Relatively new to the game (former field hockey player) it was evident she has a competitive streak - ask Att. Abby who was literally worn down from her battles with the banger!  Yes!  Abby was held to 13 points, and I'm only guessing - she hadn't run earlier in the day as she seemed full of p... and vinegar.

Sarah Stables stepped up her offensive game - Say this aloud:   Sarah Stables sunk several shots sustaining sick stats.  She was a stud.  Her 17 points and 11 rebounds gave her team a chance for the V, but late in the second half G Bears went on a run.   Callie D came out of her shell to make a presence, and Jess "Little Big" Hurt had a big second half - still running around at top speed late in the game.

Throughout the 2nd half the game was close, with the lead changing back and forth no team extending the lead to more than 4 points... But then Big Baby went to work.  Scoring a 3 point play, getting an offensive rebound and putback, blocking a shot.  Just when even loyal Sam was wondering if Katie would have the energy for the 2nd half, Baby went to work on Abby frustrating her offensive tactics and getting some huge rebounds.  G Bears took an 11 point lead, and unlike last week they held on.  Lindsay deserves some credit for her solid game, amassing 15 pts. and 8 rebounds.  On one sequence, her outlet pass sparked a G Bear fast break for a demoralizing 2 and then Killa Cross Callie hit a runner in the lane forcing Hoosier Daddy to wave the white flag.

Daddy might have been in better position if they had a full squad, but certainly this loss puts into question the legitimacy of the team in their quest for the title.  I had high hopes for this team coming in, but they haven't seemed to quite gel - a consistent effort and more focus is required.

    Mambas Seize First Place

In a high octance affair, the Black Mamba squad played half of a game against 3 ladies from the Hustle and Flow squad.  Showing great team balance with Hurov dominating the paint, the Mambas sharpened up their skills as they eagerly look forward to their game against Icebox.

    Et Tu Brute?

With Hot Sundae only having 3 players on this Sunday of a long weekend, and H + F with 5 it seemed logical that one of the H+F players would come over and play along with Sundae, but watching this from the gallery I was shocked at how quickly Ms. Tara Kelly sold out her squad in a New York minute as they say....   Some of the gallery members suspected it was in an effort to pad her stats, we'll have to give Tara the benefit of the doubt and hope it was to salvage the game and let the ladies break a sweat - although Carol Ann wasn't so understanding, calling her a few choice names during the game.   I was also fortunate enough to have Tara's bfriend in the stands.  He clued me in on the previous day's workout of 200 3 point shots, now that is dedication!  Too bad there is no workout for team loyalty...

The game was dominated by the low post game of H+F.  Carly grabbed 9 rebounds.  Kate scored at will from inside the paint, and Carol Ann rebounded and scored easily.  Glenda dropped in 3 field goals and let go of 8 four-letter words expletives - not bad!  Just missed double digits, will have to go for that next week.

On the Sundae side, they were lucky to have Hurov and Tara suited up as they carried most of the offense.  Shayna had a block party down low, with 6 rejections - still less than the number Tical had at the bar last night... Mei again was fearless, driving the ball into the teeth of the defense, drawing attention and then dishing for some easy layups.  Where was JBerr?  This was a game Sundae could have one if they had her long range shot going...

Will Tara be accepted back by the Hustle and Flow team?  How can she restore the trust and comraderie with her teammates?  This team has more intrigue and subplots than Melrose Place - stay tuned!
