Spring 2008: Women’s 5v5 League Champs: CAC Blockers

Blockers Foil Pink Ninja Assassins Plot for Womens 5v5 Title
CAC Blockers 52 Pink Ninja Assassins 27

So much for my predictions.  The CAC Blockers used a stifling defense to shut down the Killah Callie -less Pink Ninja Assassins and claim the 2nd Women's 5v5 Title.  Without Callie, the PNAs could only muster one field goal the first 12 minutes of the game and found themselves in a 21-3 hole before they had known what hit them.  Finals MVP Caitlin Vestal (18 points, 10 boards) provided the early punch with 7 quick points and would be the only Blocker in double figures for the entire night.  It's nice to see that even after a year of putting up with me, my lack of clutchness in the playoffs hasn't worn off on Gripp.

After Pack a Vestal's quick flurry, Erin "Slumpbuster" Conroy (9 points, 9 boards) and Kristin "Moonboots" Fountain (5 points, 5 assists) set the tempo.  They were battling hard inside for boards and hitting tough shots to pace the offense.  As usual, the Nose (8 points, 9 boards) was all over the offensive boards, crashing hard and fighting to give her team a second chance on each and every possession.  I was shocked that the Blockers were making such easy work of PNA without their two outside threats having big nights.  In fact, the Blockers led by 21 at the half, despite the ROCK and Rainmaker combining for just one point.  It was shocking, but these Ladies have enough weapons, that if they hold a team to just 7 points in a half, they'll be way ahead.

For the Assassins, Glenda Cancel (12 points, 3 steals) was the one woman show in the second half. A couple steals led to some tranisition buckets, and the PNA's briefly showed some signs of life.  Sweet Lu was working her tail off under the basket to get her 7 points and 13 boards.  It wasn't easy against Moonboots and the Slumpbuster, as JMo (2 points, 5 boards) can attest.  Without Callie, I thought that PNA would need to dominate the paint in order to keep it close, but the Blockers just wouldn't let that happen.  With Gripp tossing in 11 second half points and the ROCK adding a couple late 3s, this one never got close.

The Slumpbuster becomes the first female to hold 3 CAC Women's Titles, quite a historic feat.  She's going for two more next season as well.  Meanwhile, Gripp, the Rainmaker and the Nose become the first Ladies to hold both the 4v4 and 5v5 titles in the same season.  Ok, I'll admit it's only the second season of 5v5 Women's Basketball at CAC, but still, it's impressive.   The next Women's 5v5 League starts up on September 18th, don't miss out!!
