Exact Change 53

Retirement Party 46

Offensively Challenged…Still

Pregame:

Scott was back in action and RP really needed him after week 1’s dismal showing. Scott is the engine for this team and needs to be an offensive weapon for RP to be successful. Also, this would be the first real look I get at RP. Manny was out for EC (didn’t find out until 5 minutes before tipoff) so I gave RP a chance to steal a win here.

Game Notes:

  • RP picked up right where they left off in week 1, more or less, once again showing little on the offensive end. I will say this though: the shot selection was much better.
  • Unfortunately for RP, Johnny was a complete ghost in the first half. I think he finished the half with 2 points and 1 rebound in 10 minutes.
  • Bonvie and Dwight did their best to carry the offense and put points on the board but the first half belonged to Jeff Hamill. Dirty Jeff went nuclear in the first half. This dude knocked down his first three 3s which propelled EC to an 8 point lead at half.
  • The second half saw EC control the action. The three ball was really working for EC, with Dirty Jeff, Weiner and Rudy all knocking down at least 2 apiece.
  • Johnny would finally get going from deep himself, knocking down 3 second half threes to keep RP within striking distance. His shot looked much better in this game and it will need to keep improving if RP is going to do anything this season.
  • This game never really got away from EC. Every time RP made some noise, EC would answer. In the end, EC would hold RP to just 46 points and it is hard to win games when you score under 50.

Grades: In order of the stat sheet

Al (B): Pedestrian game offensively for Al, but he gets credit for not forcing shots. He played within the offense and chipped in a strong 3 steals and 2 blocks.

Weiner (A-): Another solid game for Weiner. He dished out a game high 5 dimes and did solid work in the glass for a little guy.

Dirty Jeff (A+)***KAP AWARD NOMINEE***: An absolute explosion for Dirty Jeff. 4/7 from 3 including knocking down his first 3 attempts. He was an assassin out there tonight. 11 rebounds too!

Rudy (B+): First game of the season for Rudy and he didn’t disappoint. He scored a game high 19 but he produced little else. Got the win though.

Scott (B): Scott was everywhere in this game but he only gets a B because he somehow grabbed 8 offensive rebounds and only scored 8 points. Scott needs to score 12-15 a game or this team is doomed.

Johnny (B-): Much improved game from week 1, but still only managed to show up for one half. Happy to see the shots fall but I need to see more rebounds and blocks soon.

Bonvie (B): I wanted to give Bonvie an A- but I can’t ignore his explosion which resulted in a tech. Minus the outburst he played much better than last week, especially with his shot selection.

Dwight (C+): Not great for Dwight. Did a nice job on the glass but he needs to score and dish the rock for this team.

Ben (D): Solid defense and hustle as usual, but little else.

Halliday (C): Not terrible, not great for Halliday. Needs to knock down a three or two though.

Citizen Clown 64

Bombs Away 48

Ridiculous 38-15 Second Half Ends Bombs Away Upset Bid

Pregame:

The thought pregame was pretty simple: No Djernes. No chance. Bombs Away would need a herculean effort to take out Citizen Clown without their top dog along with a meltdown from CC. I liked CC to win this game even with Djernes in action so I figured a bloodbath was about to ensue without him.

Game Notes:

  • No one told Dustin Armstrong about this so called “bloodbath.” This dude came out of the gates piping hot knocking down a barrage of threes while giving Bombs Away a quick lead.
  • Dan Ly also got in the action hitting one of his patented parking lot threes and all of a sudden we had a double digit lead for Bombs Away.
  • Citizen Clown looked shell shocked and also looked like a team who thought they could just show up and they would win. Bombs Away had other ideas however.
  • As expected though, Press was unguardable. He had his way in the first half as he was able to keep CC from getting laughed out of the gym. Credit to Bombs Away as they won the first half 33-26.
  • The tale of two halves my friends! CC came out of the break with a purpose. Hanks was able to get in the act and help Press on offense. Press continued his assault scoring from all over the floor inside the 3 point line. Even Yak was knocking down everything he put up.
  • Annnnd just like that CC had their first lead and they didn’t look back. In fact, they ended up running away with this one outscoring Bombs Away 38-15 in the second half. I will attribute this second half drubbing to two things: Press going ham and the 3 ball running dry for Bombs Away.
  • I have to credit Bombs Away though. They played a hell of a first half, but they just couldn’t sustain the hot shooting for the whole game. These boys showed me something though.

Grades: In order of the stat sheet

Press (A-)***PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE***: Dropped a game high 32 and carried the load offensively. Docked a little for the 0/5 from deep showing but he was cooking in this one.

Hanks (B): A solid showing from Hanks. Struggled to find the touch around the rim but he chipped in 15 to go with 6 rebounds.

Frank (C+): The scoring wasn’t there but Frank found ways to contribute. He is due for a 3-point explosion one of these weeks.

Cheese (B+): Cheese played well tonight. Dished a game high 5 dimes and grabbed 8 rebounds. He ran the show effectively, especially in the second half.

Yak (A)***KAP AWARD NOMINEE***: Wow what a game from this guy. Pretty sure his 10 points came on 5/5 from the field. If Yak can score 10ppg this team will be very hard to beat.

Chao (B): When Chao snags and offensive rebound he gets a good grade!

Smith (A-): Rock solid game for KSmoove who continues his breakout season. Dropped 17 and dished the rock well. I like what I am seeing from this guy through 2 weeks.

Armstrong (B+): Armstrong went nuts in the first half but was a complete non-factor in the second. I can’t ignore his effort tonight though overall as he was asked to do more than usual.

Ly (B): Ly was decent in this one but I would have liked to see him shoot less parking lot threes. He hit a couple but the percentage was bad. His team probably needed those attempts though tbh.

Al (C+): Nothing special from Al here. He had to guard Press which really sucks for him so I can’t hate on the guy too much. He should see better days ahead.

Amir (C): Amir was only 1 of 2 people on his team to record an assist. That counts for something right?

This is Crazy 60

Senior Citizen Discount 43

No Second Half Discount

Pregame:

The pregame storyline here was pretty simple…don’t start 0-2! After coming off week 1 losses I know Dustin and Nate each did not want to start the season 0-2. I mean, who would? Ed was out for SCD while Bohnaker was out TIC. I deemed this more or less a wash.

Game Notes:

  • Newcomer and highly touted (by me) rookie Rich Cody was in action tonight and he was not shy out of the gate. Maybe he should have been. This guy was throwing up some heinous bricks left and right that had me cringe a little bit.
  • Luckily for him, Dustin came to play. He was a menace in the first half, absolutely dominating TIC in the paint. Layup lines for days.
  • TIC had no answer for Dustin, but the same could be same for Ray. Ray was ready to ball tonight after a forgettable week 1. He was on point from all over the floor and was really unguardable for most of the night.
  • TIC was the slightly better team in a first half that was really a close contest throughout. SCD only trailed by 3 at the break despite some horrific shooting.
  • Dustin cooled off big time in the second half which had a direct correlation with the score. To make matters worse, TIC found another gear and ripped SCD to shreds in the second half.
  • Ray and Nate were straight cookin’ while no one on SCD could get going. Hell even the Murdoch 3 point barrage (he made one 3) couldn’t get SCD going.
  • This game got ugly FAST with TIC opening up a double digit lead midway through the second half and coasting to the win. Cody really struggled from the floor and he will need to be better as the season progresses if SCD is gonna compete this season.

Grades: In order of the stat sheet.

Nate (B+): Very solid game for Nate who buried 5 treys on his way to 19 points. I would have liked to see more from Nate in the assist department but I am just nitpicking here.

Ray (A)***PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE***: Monster game for Ray who dropped 27 to go with 16 rebounds. Ray has the potential to put these lines up week in and week out and he came through tonight.

Spiegel (B+)***KAP AWARD NOMINEE***: Spiegel was awesome tonight despite going 1/5 from the free throw line. This dude blocked 4 shots and snagged 6 rebounds. Not too shabby for the rookie.

Danner (C+): Danner did a nice job on the offensive glass but I would have liked to see him knock down 1 or 2 of those wide open threes. He played his role on this team fine though.

Bernstein (B): Pretty good debut for Bernstein who played within himself and in the flow of the offense. Got a couple buckets and did a nice job on the glass.

Cody (D): Ugly debut for Cody who shot 1/12 from 3, many of which weren’t particularly good looks. It was his first game so I won’t be too hard on him but this is one to forget.

Dustin (A-): Dustin played a whale of a game, trying to will his team to victory. It wasn’t meant to be though. That said, I can’t hate on what Dustin did out there tonight.

Rikleen (B): Rikleen is still trying to find the touch around the rim but his rebounding tenacity cannot be overlooked. Rikleen was solid on the glass once again which was critical without Ed in action.

Murdoch (B+): TRASH! Made a 3 and grabbed 10 rebounds. Pretty good for an old man!

Dmitry (D): 0/5 from 3 is pretty bad. Not a great showing but he did collect 7 rebounds so it wasn’t all bad!

Kap sucks, then he doesnt; Carlucci gets lemons, makes pepperoni

Nice For What 59, We Forgot to Warm-up 53

Coming into this game, I would have given Fraher’s “We forgot to warm up” squad the edge. They have good size, a bunch of scoring options, and some good defenders. As it turns out, most everyone on both teams looked like they’d forgotten to warm up. It was painful at times…almost like I was watching myself play basketball, but thankfully Ron started putting the ball in the basket with a couple 3’s to give the unstretched crew the early lead. Harry was the recipient of some nice dishes from Kap and Jet early on, but Kap was cold as leftovers in Fairbanks throwing up absolute bricks, and doing a lot of pursed-lip head shaking, like he'd just seen a millennial steal an old lady’s purse. That self-reflection would translate into some positive basketball in the second half, but it was Ron and Chuck Cas-I’ll beat your-assa running and rippin’. On the game Ron went 4-5 from deep, and honestly should keep launching with that percentage. Chuck was all over the place, and there was no answer for him as he plucked rebounds out of the air. At one point, it appeared as though he pulled the old “I found a quarter behind your ear” trick, but with a basketball, and proceeded bite the basketball and spit it into the basket. He then glared at everyone on the court with red eyes and professed to being a machine. He'd dominate in the post either getting layups at will, or getting fouled and then draining the free throws. A  game well played by that man. Box him out for fucks sake!

Surprisingly, even with Kap deep in some mindfulness exercises on the sidelines, seriously contemplating how he could be tied with Rudy Hersh of all people in league scoring, the game was very close at half with the anti-warmup heroes leading by a two point margin. Harry is going to have a good year methinks. With Kap and Jet, he’s going to find himself wide open under the basket a lot. The other factor keeping Drake’s fan boyz in the game was Carlucci who was raining down 3’s as easily as he sprinkles some parmesan on his pasta.

The second half was definitely different. It looked like both teams finally figured out what the orange thing was for, and Kap finally made his first basket as did Ghost, who scored all 12 of his points in the second half. Cheever had a couple really nice layups in traffic, but couldn’t get much going with some tough defense by Nice For What who locked it down in the 2nd. Between Kap’s big half of scoring, and Papa Nate’s 3pt meal deal, Nice for What was able to creep out to a decent lead and hold off a comeback from Fraher and company.

Overall, I think Jet drafted a great team, and they proved they can win even when their best played has an absolute armpit of a half. They are very deep and got great contributions from Tom, Dick, and Harry. And by Dick, I mean my dick…that did a great job not peeing in my pants as I kept score. Brad looks like he’s a really good defender, had a couple nice steals, and did decent work on Fraher, but he’s got to put himself in a position to reap the benefits of driving Kap/Jet like Harry did. Carlucci though…bombs! Gotta get a hand in his face or he’ll just turn you all into red sauce.

Ghost has a good squad as well…they just needed a little more to get back into this one. Ron shot well, played great defense as always, and Fraher turned it on in the second half. Chuck was a total animal out there, and it’s going to be tough for most teams to match up with his size, assuming a bigger dude is going to have to guard Fraher. Everyone’s forearms got to go home with fewer bruises with Randall out, but he’ll certainly help distribute the ball when he’s back, and Cheever and Rich are great pieces, but just didn’t have it against a stingy defense.
