SDL Week 1

Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooh shit we back in action boys!!! Finally. This winter has been a long and boring one for ya boi; after winning one game last sessions I’m hoping to win two this time around.

Welcome to the SDL, where we ball up on a too small court in a rando Somerville middle school (177 Powder House Blvd, Somerville, MA 02144) on a too early Saturday morning. Hey, it’s a reason to get out of bed for me.

Week one is the most revelatory for all of us. We have several rookies to the SDL who should swing things for better or worse this season. But we also get to see who let themselves go in the offseason and who sobers up quick enough (not Sydorko). This does make doing week one lines a bit challenging, but I shall endeavor to provide you the details you need to be successful and the coverage you crave despite your tiny basketball talent.

10:20 AM Free Hat vs.  Respect My Gangster

I don’t like either team name. There. I said it. But I respect Cheese’s initiative to build a franchise in the SDL and they went to the finals last season, so who knows, could be on to something. Either way, this will be a really interesting game. I have both teams ranked high.

First glaring question; who covers the Kraken? RMG is kinda small? I guess you can throw Pizza at him since he’s built like a punching bag anyway, but idk, doesn’t seem fun for a guy coming back from injury.

Second question; who sets the table for FH? I trust in Cheese but is he going to hold up on the other end guarding Chan or Musse? I guess you can throw him on Jones and see how he’s shooting.

I think Musse will lead the league in assists, in no small part due to the number of weapons he has at his disposal. But it might take some time for these guys to learn to play together. Chan off the ball is good. And no one knows Wade yet, but I suspect he, along with Jones, will stretch the floor. A lot to like here on offense, especially with Pizza mixing up off the bench inside. And Jorge will cut.

FH will be solid defensively with Sydorko inside, along with the length of Espi and the muscles of Seyi. But again, it’s opposing guard play I’m worried about, and RMG has a bunch of good ones. Sheffield is the x-factor; if he can guard up and down this will ease the issue somewhat. BB will bring it, but will he bring too much and foul out?

Second game will be most influenced by an SDL rookie. This is what happens when said rookie goes number one. Learning how Lerner (sorry) plays and how Harry/Frongi/Brewer orbit will be their main task for the game. The second will be trying not to hemorrhage points. Which, Idk man. They’re a small team. If they get positive contributions and stops from the bench you got to be happy with that.

DJ has an embarrassment of riches. At least on offense; by the numbers I see two guys who just averaged 20+ ppg in the SDL, another guy who will coming from A Draft, and two more guys in double digits.

WTF guys.

Too bad we have to play on the other end as well. I’m not seeing any standout defenders here… but if we score 100 points, does it matter if we give up 99?

Math guys. It matters.

Game of the week alert! One team thinks it’s already the best in the league based on continuity and championships. The other is going to meet itself for the first time tomorrow. Maybe I’m a pessimist, but I don’t think it’s going to go well for the latter.

So, why I am excited for this game?

Because I think Dunton’s team is super loaded. Klep has good stats so coming to a watered down league should be a fox in the henhouse situation. Skelley is big & good, when he shows up. And is healthy. Abhi, as I’ve said repeatedly, got buckets at the combine. And having a shooter like Charles off the bench is a luxury. Yet, none of these guys look like they’ll be able to stop Kerr, so things might get ugly.

I love shootouts. LOVE them. Give me high scoring no defense games please. Steiner, DC, and Slick can all light it up. Sure, they all need someone to create those looks, but if Zak can do it Kerr can probably do it. Bringing the ball up might be a challenge, but idk, pass it or something.

(I don’t pass so I’m just spitballing here)

Either way, I like the defense length & intensity these guys bring (2.5 0/U Slick floor slaps) and Davi will kill you by a thousand cuts if you’re not paying attention or charmed by his boyish baby face. I think Dunton will matchup fine with him, but that still leaves a bunch of stretch assignments for the rest of his squad. And in week one, when you’re just trying to remember who’s on your team (check the jersey colors; same as you, good!) and names I think defensive rotations might escape them.

That’s it. Let me know what you think. See you Saturday.

Thanks for the draft recap and week 1 preview Alan, great work. Thanks to Sydorko too for his thoughts in the other thread.

Zak, Mazz, Rosiello, Medeiros have been on the title winning team for the past like four years or so, so this should be an interesting season as the league is truly up for grabs for the first time in a long time.

Team Dunton is going to go as far as the rookies take it. Based on their stats and bios I thing they will do well and this could be a top team.

Team Djordje has offensive ability for sure but not sure how well everyone fits. Several of their guys best skill is scoring, but they don’t have a true mvp type talent.

Team Jones should be a solid team, but less variable than the others depending on how good their rookie is. Nothing screams championship here.

Team Cheese has a lack of guards and a lack of shooting. Strong guard or guard type play (3s and assists) tends to win this league more than size or defense. They’ll need Sydorko to keep averaging over 20 ppg but even that probably doesn’t get them over the hump championship wise.

Team Steiner looks great until you remember Kerr is a 2 apg guy and isn’t really going to replicate Zaks ability to lift his team up offensively.

Team Lebov is going to go as far as Lerner takes us, which in my opinion is going to be all the way to the title. We just need to give him enough help, which I think we can.

AO coming in spitting that hot fire

10:20 AM Free Hat vs.  Respect My Gangster

first battle of the season is going to be a throw back to ancient times.. reenacting the classic tale of david and goliath (team of giants vs the vertically challenged)

episode 18 GIFImage Enlarger

things will boil down to efficiency and squad who comes out on top owns this category.. were going to thrive inside the paint, while jones squad is built to make it rain from long range

in this league, a lack of a true PG isn't a death sentence.. think we have enough unselfish players to make this work by sharing the responsibilities (also jared is a one man fast break all by himself)

musse will put up points and assists regardless of who you put around him.. curious how the pick and roll game will be effected by a lack of a true big men

stats say wade can shoot.. should he hit at a 40% clip from deep this squad will be dangerous

FH -3.5

harry's squad is lacking shooting, whose going to be smacking from long range when the inevitable double comes lerners way.. is he capable of beating it himself? able to find the open man?

starter will be forced into carrying a bulk of the scoring.. are brewer, stuto, dylan up for the challenge of carrying their own weight?

The Big D managed to surround himself with some serious offensive talent.. AO & Paul both come in averaging 20+ while himself and remy are consistently putting up double digits

Im seeing a ton of guards who need the ball in their hands to operate and be firing on all cylinders.. will they be able to share the rock and make the offense flow?

steiner has the 2nd biggest squad in the league, but also suffers from the same pit-falls as my team.. a lack of a true PG, though you know DC/Steiner/Davi are unselfish and willing to move the ball

at a loss for who has any hope on dunton's squad of slowing down kerr.. put the big on him and hes blowing by/jacking an easy 3, put a small and hes bullying down-low

pretty much in the dark for dunton's big 3, so they remain a wild card

Steiner -4.5
