Rivalry week continues into what should have been the last week of the season. Time to revisit all of our week 1 match-ups, when we didn’t know anything, now we know it all. It will be interesting to see what plays out differently, because it sure didn’t look like teams learned anything from their week 2 rematches. TO THE LINES!

Let’s Get Tropical vs. Kawhi So Serious 6pm Game:

When these teams met all the way back in week 1, Let’s Get Tropical, was severely undermanned and got it handed to them by KSS. Now it’s week 8 and they don’t have the same excuses from week 1. KSS, has been up and down all season, but probably more consistent than LGT.

Let’s Get Tropical, admittedly looked a lot better last week, than in previous weeks. That could have been from the competition they’re playing or maybe from the right guys being out. Who knows? All I know is I don’t know what I’m getting here. Personnel wise, they definitely have the defenders to match up with KSS, their bigs and Newton at point. They could throw any number of guys at Newton to slow him down and they should be able to keep KSS at bay on the boards. All things being equal, their defense should be able to lock up KSS.

I do like KSS’s ability to play with more energy and aggression than LGT, in this game. I think they play more like they actually like each other out there. Their new problem though, is that Newton, has been getting into foul trouble. They don’t have much of a chance if Newton is on the bench for a lot of the game. They need his ability to penetrate and move the ball for others to get hoops. They can’t just rely on Wise or McGirr or Ralph to secure a thousand offensive rebounds a game.

Perhaps, if I knew who was showing up for LGT, I could make an accurate decisions on their chances for winning the game. Based on talent alone, I would go with LGT, but their wildly inconsistent with their play and selfishness offensively. Therefore, I’m going to side with KSS in this game and assume Newton has learned his lesson with fouling every play.

Kawhi So Serious -3 over Let’s Get Tropical.

A Quiet Place vs. Ghost Rider 7pm Game:

This will be the game of the week, a match-up between the current number 2 and 3 seeds in the playoffs. A Quiet Place, fell to Ghost Rider, in a close game in week 1. Both of these teams look about the same from their first match-up, AQP has the same Quiet offense and GH, still has the leading MVP candidate.

The big question for AQP, has to be their offense. They have a group of guys who are more than capable of getting buckets, but haven’t seemed to find a flow all season long. Last week, they were missing their top 2 picks, but put forth an embarrassing effort, scoring 39 points. Last time these two teams played, they only scored 49 points. Where are the points going to come from for AQP in this game? Leblanc has been good getting the offense going, but doesn’t seem capable anymore of dropping 25-30 points. Eusden is going to tie Koller up all game. Who is going to get this team the scoring they need to win this game?

Ghost Rider has an avenue to scoring. It’s called pass Luther the ball and get out of the way. However, they could have problems of their own scoring in this game. Last time AQP didn’t know Luther, so they could adjust to his game, but Ghost was out for them. Ghost is certainly capable of dropping buckets, especially since he might have a good match-up in this game. The other guys though are going to step up, if Musse is out again.

Let’s be honest here, this game is going to be a rock fight. Both teams play good defense and with some absences, both teams are going to have trouble scoring here. I think Ghost Rider will have less trouble though, because they have a more direct way of scoring. AQP, is just too inconsistent against better teams scoring wise.

Ghost Rider -2 over A Quiet Place

Del Boca Vista vs Run N’ Shoot 8pm Game:

After these two teams met in week 1, I wouldn’t have thought that Run N’ Shoot would have a better record than DBV when they met again, but here we are. Run N’ Shoot continued to victimize KSS, getting their second win of the season against them last week. DBV, lost the disappointing team bowl against LGT last week. They must be looking forward to seeing Run N’ Shoot tomorrow night, because………

DBV’s best game of the season was against Run N’ Shoot, which shockingly enough was Frongi’s best game of the season. Does those two things have something in common? They sure do. Run N’ Shoot doesn’t play much defense, unless they’re playing KSS, which plays right into DBV’s hands. Del Boca Vista, is in serious need of a game where everyone can play freely and get their looks up. They have struggled to score over the course of the season, because they never know what they’re getting from anyone. I expect Lagno, Frongi and Mazz to be able to score in this game.

Conversely, Run N’ Shoot played absolutely terrible against these guys in week 1. Lerner, looked like a guy who hadn’t seen a basketball in years nor had been introduced to his teammates. I suspect that this time will be different, with Lerner getting more of a flow in this one. Run N’ Shoot played their best brand of basketball last week and I’ll be looking forward to seeing if they can do it two weeks in a row. It’s a lot to ask of our 8th man to be electric two weeks in a row.

Like the two match-ups above, I see this game as being close. DBV, hasn’t exactly given me much hope the past few weeks, so I’m going to play a hunch and assume they’re a lot better this week. I like how they match-up against RNS and as everyone knows, basketball is a game of match-ups.

Del Boca Vista -4.5 over Run N’ Shoot

Get Rich, Die Trying vs. We Fly High 9pm Game:

We Fly High is flying high off a big win last week, where they put up a season high in points and allowed a season low. The other team was down some guys, but so were they and it’s an impressive win nonetheless. A similar scenario played out for my team last week as we played a short-handed Ghost Rider team and ran away with an ugly win.

The last time we played these guys, they were without MacDonald. That’s obviously a big loss for them, since MacDonald is at or near the top of the players you’d want guarding Pollock or Weinstein. He will help them there, but I’m not sure where they are going to get all the points they need to win. Etheridge, is the one place I’d look. He’s capable of scoring 20 or more points a game, but he has to make some free throws. Have to make the free ones, if you want to put up big scoring numbers.

On the other side, we have some options, but our low 3-point attempt total bugs me. We need to shoot more threes, we just pass up too many looks. Also, speaking of free throws, we need to start making more ourselves. The playoffs are coming and free throws are crucial in big games. Pollock and Weinstein, especially need to make theirs.

Honestly, I think this game comes to an open AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMIR three pointer. Does he have the heart to make it? Only AAAAAAAAAAMIR knows.

Get Rich, Die Trying -10.5 over We Fly High.

True on Luther, but Ghost was there in our first game and was the second-leading scorer with 14 points, all of which were big in a low-scoring game. Actually missing in the first game was Civale, and he makes a difference for us. With a second look and a full squad, I like our chances. Should be a good game though.

Not getting to finish is rough in general, but cut off with 8 minutes still remaining is particularly brutal. I hope for the sake of the losing team that the margin wasn’t very close.

It was actually 10 minutes left in the half and we were only down 2 with the ball in my hands about to drive to the hoop and the ref abruptly stopped the game and called it. Giving the circumstances, granting any team a win/loss does not seem right at all with me and seems only fair to call it an outright tie since it is unfortunately unrealistic to finish the game at another date.

This was just the cherry on top of a season that has been riddled with a court that shouldnt be played in any 5v5 league and honestly is unsafe to play on due to its constant wet floor especially the 9pm games (Mike Buryzk tore his ACL/Andre strained his MCL on my team in a game), refs who have been the worst i’ve experienced in some time with them barely pay attention and are constantly missing calls/not caring about players safety at all, and one game that we played without a scoreboard.

Rant over – hope going forward other future sessions only improve.

Rant is completely warranted. Just an absolute joke of a session. Court is flat out dangerous and the refs are just on their phones for half the games, barely paying attention.

Run N’ Shoot gets their revenge

Del Boca Vista, came into this game looking for a win for any kind. They have been freefalling for a while now and needed some hope. Hope seemed to be on the way in the form of the team they defeated handily in week 1. Run N’ Shoot was coming off their best win of the season, looking to keep the momentum going. Brandon O., would be out for them and DBV had all their guys. TO THE ACTION!

Shoutout to Etheridge for doing stats and keeping notes for the game. He has much better hand writing than me as does everyone else in the world. Unlike Week 1, Run N’ Shoot came out hot in this one, behind number 1 Overall pick, Daniel Lerner. I’m happy to see that some point over the past two weeks, Lerner, has introduced himself to his teammates or someone has. They are finally centering their attack around his skills as they should be and naturally, it’s leading to good things. Lerner, had 20 first half points. If you’re scoring at home, that’s 16 more than he had total in the first game.

On the other end, it was more of the same for Del Boca Vista. Frongi, just can’t convert a lay-up to save his life. I think he’s aiming too high on the glass or is lacking control going up, but he’s worse than Cavano at lay-ups, at this point. Zukic, had himself a good half of basketball inside the paint. Mazz, finally realized he has to throw his big man passes over the top, instead of at his ankles. A funny pre-game note was Zukic working on his jump shot follow through, then proceeding to air ball his first two jump shots. He was a beast on the boards though.

Other first half notes, was Tom being electric once again. Tom, makes a big difference on this team with his passing and energy, gets me all kinds of excited at the scorer’s table. Also of note, Lerner crossed Paul Lagno into next week on one play, which was pretty cool to see.  Run N’ Shoot went into the half up 40-26. BACK TO THE ACTION!

Things would slow down significantly for Run N’ Shoot in the second half, because Lerner slowed down in the second half. RNS, stopped connecting from deep as well, going 1 for 12 from three in the second half. The shots just weren’t falling the same way and DBV’s defense was a little better as well. Lerner, would lead his team with 6 second half points.

With the door opened a bit, DBV, was able to go on a run, thanks to a Mazz scoring burst. Mazz, did a good job of going to the hole and drawing fouls. He went to the line 8 times in the second half, going 7 for 8. That one miss would have gotten them a tie game, but 7 for 8 is about all you can ask for in rec. ball. Zukic, continued to devour rebounds and put-backs, including a made jumper. The rest of the team, especially Frongi and Lagno, continued to be unable to score. Lagno, did record 6 assists though, which is pretty damn good for him.

DBV, had their chances to in this one. I mentioned the Mazz missed free throw above, it was 57-52 with 3 minutes left. Cavano and Conor would each miss the front ends of 1-1s with DBV down 3, but they didn’t connect. Cavano, would go back to the free line down 1 and make both. However, DBV would run the clogged toilet offense and be unable to even get a shot up. 61-58 Final.

Grades

Lerner B+: Lerner, was very good in the first half, but his second half was weak.

Cavano B: This was a good Cavano game, even with no made FGs in the second half.

Sutton B+: Team leading four assists, I like to see that.

Conor B-: His shot was off, but I love the work on the boards and he didn’t force anything.

Johnson C: Quiet game for Johnson, I want more than one board.

Kola C+: The plus is for the defensive work, I want some scoring down low and stronger takes.

Tom Electricity Level: 400 Volts: Tom’s energy is huge for this team and I love it.

DBV

Mazz B+: Finally, a half decent game from Mazz. Maybe he’ll get an A some point this season.

Frongi D+Woof

Butterworth C+: The stats say his game wasn’t good, but I felt like I saw some good hustles plays and I’m right dammit.

Christian C-: They need some buckets out of him. Zeroes won’t cut it.

Zukic A-: Big man double-double, make your free throws.

Muccio C: The energy was there, but 1 for 8 from 3 is no good.

Lagno B-: 6 assists is a good day at the office, but only 8 points on bad shooting is not.

Quiet Place Earns Season’s Biggest Win

The match-up of the night featured two teams destined to meet each other in the second round of the playoffs, in what will be the trilogy game between them for the season. AQP, had everyone there for this big game. Ghost Rider, was missing Musse and the other Shaffer. TO THE ACTION!

Ghost Rider started the game in zone, which was an interesting choice, considering the fact they match up pretty well with AQP. The zone worked in the beginning, mostly because Koller looks like this trying to find an open spot in the zone:

Anybody Here GIFs | TenorImage Enlarger

Eventually, the guy who knows what he’s doing out there, Leblanc started poking holes in the zone and connecting from deep. Leblanc had 11 first half points, to go along with 3 first half assists. The same guy who when I played zone against his Wednesday team played coy and questioned “your worried too much about me Harry”.

On the other end, Mr. Diagram, Eusden started out hot, connecting on two treys and had 12 first half points, to go along with a whole lot of rebounds. Luther had 7 first half points of his own, but was frustrated throughout the game by Koloff and other’s defense. AQP, trademark defense was strong all game.

The game went back and forth, with A Quiet Place going into the half up 30-27. Ghost Rider, wasn’t getting much of anything from their supporting cast and that would play a big role in deciding the game. BACK TO THE ACTION!

Ghost Rider would change their defense in the second half, deciding to go to man. This decision didn’t work out well at all, with AQP’s offense finally coming to life in a second half game. Civale and Koller would really get going, scoring in the paint. I don’t know how Ghost Rider was matching up, but they kept leaving smaller guys on bigs. Felt like they didn’t quite know how to match up and eventually, they went back to the zone defense.

The offense for Ghost Rider, didn’t change at all in the second half. The supporting cast just wasn’t able to give much, but that wasn’t all their fault as Luther became more frustrated with the physical play, he stopped moving the ball. The only one looking for others in the second half on Ghost Rider, was Sheff. Can’t beat a good defensive team with only 3 guys shooting the ball. It was all good though, as Ghost Rider, had a little team cheer after one of their timeouts.

It was 52-48 with 5 minutes remaining, in favor of AQP. They were able to get some easy buckets in transition, they really changed what was a tight half-court defensive affair. Ghost Rider, just couldn’t find the buckets to make this a one possession game and threaten AQP. The game ended with Ghost Rider attempting to call a time out down 4 with 3 seconds left, but it didn’t happen. 63-59 Final.

Grades

Civale B: Much better second half that looked more like himself.

Koller B-: Ditto for above, but Eusden ate on him, Koller sees Eusden in his nightmares.

Leblanc B+: No second half FGs, but I liked the way he played and defended.

Koloff B: This team always has a bunch of guys who score in only one half, Koloff is another. I liked his physical defense though too.

Doherty D+: Doherty is much better than the shit sandwich he’s been giving.

Taha ELECTRICITY: 300 VOLTS: 3 Assists and a three pointer, just missing a sexy lay-up.

Ghost Rider:

Luther C: Where’s my assists? Let himself get thrown off by the game’s physicality.

Ghost B+: Typical Ghost game, buckets, some boards, that’s it.

Eusden A-: Normally, I would toast Eusden to pieces for his diagram and then losing, but he did his part in this game.

Sheff C+: Had as many assists as his entire team, BUT this game they needed some buckets too.

Frank C+: Same story, but with rebounds instead of assist.

Lindsay C-: Give me a stat, any stat.

Thoughts:

  • Ignoring Kenny and Alex completely in the individual grades is impolite.
  • Zach did a nice job against Luther, including what I thought were a couple tough whistles on good defense.
  • I could not make a shot from the soft spots in the zone to save my life. In the second half, we got Civale in the middle a little bit and he made a couple big buckets.
  • Greg made a lot more jumpers than I expected from someone who was 2/17 from 3 prior to this game, and 47% on FTs. Maybe that’s what I get for relying just on stats.

It does seem like a 2nd round playoff meeting is in the cards if we both take care of business – not foregone conclusion though, especially with We Fly High looking better lately and lurking in that 6/7 spot. Also, if not every team made the playoffs, that early-ended game would be a much bigger headache, instead of just impacting seeding. If Get Rich had lost that game, #1 seed would be in play during our matchup next week.

Point Cawley, Game Tropical

The feast or famine, Let’s Get Tropical, started the night against Kawhi So Serious. Since, KSS, won the first match-up this game had bunch of playoff implications on the seedings. Let’s Get Tropical, had everyone for this team game, KSS was missing fading MVP candidate, Newton and Ottomatic. TO THE ACTION!

Let’s Get Tropical, has had a change in their offensive scheme the past week, when everyone realized Cawley was probably the best player on the team and deserved the ball a lot more. Therefore, Cawley, has taken over point guard duties for this team and the results were pretty damn good for LGT. Cawley, had 8 first half assists and they were all good ones off the drive, finding the open man. Cawley, is one selfish fuck, but he knows how to play basketball and run the show. He did a great job of getting everyone involved and getting them all the good looks. All those good looks led to 44 first half points, a season high for LGT.

However, LGT wouldn’t have a first half lead in this game, because their defense was an abomination in the first half. They let Cantoni and Pranam combine for 5 first half threes. KSS, was moving the ball very well, for a team missing their point guard and the heart of their team. McGirr, of all people, would lead the team with four first half assists. As you can imagine, they weren’t as pretty as Cawley’s assists. Nonetheless, they did the job and KSS, was playing inspired basketball.

KSS, went into the half up 45-44. Each team racked up an impressive 10 plus assist in the first half. Cantoni, led all the bucket getters, with 15 first half points. BACK TO ACTION!

LGT continued their positive regression on offense, finally looking like a team that had met each other before the game. Cawley, slowed down a bit with the assists, but made up for it, scoring 12 second half points. Clasby, picked up the assist charge, grabbing 3 of his own in the second half. Djordje, also chipped in two assists as well in this half. The point of the story is, LGT finally had the ball moving. Filip, was the biggest benefactor of all this movement. He would lead both teams with 18 second half points and they were mostly all good looks.

KSS, tried to keep up with the scoring onslaught by LGT. Pranam, continued to hit from deep, connecting on 3 second half treys. Cantoni, would hit 2 more from deep himself, but they were beginning to get a lot harder to find. He would go 2 for 7 from three in this half. Wise, was terrorizing the offensive boards, with 7 O-boards. He had 10 second half points.

Obviously, neither team had trouble scoring the ball, but KSS just couldn’t match up with LGT. Without Newton or Ottmatic, KSS, doesn’t have enough athletic wing players and Pranam, is about 100 pounds, soak and wet. Not fair to ask him to guard Clasby or even Filip. If you can’t get a stop, you can’t win. LGT pulled away, winning 89-80.

Djordje C: Got his boards and some dimes, but felt like he was outplayed by Wise all game on the boards and when your team has 89 points, you better have at least one hoop.

Cawley A+: Got his team back on track and scoring 89 points. Nothing more can be asked of him.

Dwyer B-: Clean up the boards in the second half and played Ralph to a draw, but I feel like he can do better.

Filip A+: It won’t get much better than this, on both ends of the floor.

Clasby B-: Second half Dan struck again, I like to see him leading his team in assists in the second half though.

Manny B+: 5 for 7 from three is very good, just didn’t do much in the second half.

Maz C+: I like his defense, just need a bit more on offense.

Ian C: I might start giving Ian some hockey assists, get me a bucket kid.

KSS (Everyone is getting docked points for getting torched on defense)

Pranam B+: Solid effort from Pranam, 5 threes is very good from him.

Ralph B-:  Best game of the season so far. He just needs to show up more often.

Wise B: Pretty standard Wise game, more O-boards than D-boards.

McGirr B-: Great job moving the ball, leading the team in assists is a miracle for McGirr.

Abreu C: Abreu is the opposite of Clasby, disappears in the second half after strong starts.

Cantoni C+: Buckets and assists were there, though it took a whole lot of shots to get there.

Cawley was definitely making some Rondo-esc passes all game which lead to a lot of easy buckets. KSS also got it to within 4 late in the game and Manny knocked down a huge 3 with not an inch of space, thought that was pretty huge for our team securing the W. I definitely threw up an unnecessary heat check late, but it’s a work in progress.

The same guy who when I played zone against his Wednesday team played coy and questioned “your worried too much about me Harry”.

This still holds up. Way too much attention – should we expect a zone defense next week?!

And below – you missed my second half three point make, hopefully it was reflected in the score. Damn it, Harry!

Leblanc B+: No second half FGs, but I liked the way he played and defended.

Haha, I was wondering why I was short 3 points on the box sheet. I gave it to your captain, because God knows Civale needs it, but I’ll adjust. No zone next week.

Hey guys! Do we have the schedule for this week? Assuming it’s the first round of the playoffs?

I was assuming we are making up the games that were postponed on June 29, which Tibbs said at the time he’d “add to the back end of the schedule.”
