Spring 2010: B1 5v5 League Champs: Lotion in the Basket

Lotion Plays Their Way Into B1 Uni Game
Polish Hammers 45 Lotion in the Basket 57

Promo: Tommy Doyle's. Two locations nearby in Kendall Square and Harvard Square. Harvard's got three floors of glory, including the Crimson Lounge down in the basement while Kendall's got the patio outside. Yet both are right nearby waiting for you and the team to come on down (R.I.P. Rod Roddy) to Tommy Doyle's!

Thank goodness we play the actual games in this league!!!

Lotion In The Basket is your B1 5v5 West Champion as they defeated the mighty top-seeded Polish Hammers with an impressively grinding 57-45 win.

It may have been ugly in terms of offense, but Lotion will take it. Sean Osgood scored 11 points in each half to end up with a game-high 22 points, but the player of the game was Billy Fratelli. Most impressively, the missed FT streak kept up, but not before BFrat had 11 big 1st-half points including a huge 3 that put his team up 11 right before the break.

It's hard to believe that this game was 41-41 with 9:00 as Royce's short jumper made this a deadlock. Before that point, Durbrow and Polansky were the only ones doing the heavy lifting out there for the Hammers. Durbrow was fantastic as he got 18 big ones, while Polansky caught fire to score 10 of his 12 after the break. Yet, the slow-plodding nature of this one seemed to cater more towards LITB.

And then Osgood added a huge AND 1 at this point. Spidle followed up with a 15-footer and then the lead stayed at five down the stretch. We got down to 3:00 left and then 2:00...and it was still there for the taking. It looks LITB might have gone Four Corners, but then Osgood pulls up for 3 and BANG! 51-43 lead for LITB!

Aggression gets rewarded, after all. Osgood's 3 did the damage and that was all he wrote. Cruel ending for the Hammers as they had a terrible game, by their own admission. I thought if BDubs and Polansky had any help on offense, they probably win this game as they only gave up 57. Yet, it was a resilient LITB squad led by BFrat, Osgood, Spidle (11, 9 in the 2nd half), and their captain Cheese (two steals including a floorburner) that did the job.

Congrats to Lotion In the Basket...they draw Big Nice in the B1 5v5 Uni final on August 4th, 2010. The game will be played at 7:00 at Charlestown B&G Club.

Undermanned LITB Steals One Late To Dodge Quick Release

Promo: $10 pitchers at Tommy Doyle's is where it's at game week for all you CAC basketball players. And don't forget, League Night Out, is on May 14th, starting up 6:30 at the Tommy Doyle's in Harvard. We've got the basement bar and it's gonna be slammin' like Onyx.

Recap: The Basket's back. And even without a lot of key pieces in thiis one, they Kerred themselves to a victory they probably shouldn't have had. Chris Kerr's big lay-up (while getting fouled) with :12 ended up being the game-winner as LITB hung tough for the 61-57 win.

Tough loss for Quick Release as they led most of the game (or at least the 80% I covered while going to another school along with the refs), but really, they had no answer for Chris Kerr. Kerr's 26 points showcased that sweet jump hook, the tenacity on the o-glass, and a penchant for the big play at the end.

Masterful D by LITB at the end as they only gave up two free throws in the last six minutes of this one. Cheese did one helluva job QB'ing this one, especially by grabbing the young gun, Ribeiro, to make a few key plays (still, he can eliminate the bad shots). Can't forget the huge 3 off glass by the evil BFrat that made this a one-point game before Kerr's huge shot.

Osgood did well filling in here as 15 points/8 rebounds (including the insurance AND 1) showed up big to be the 2nd punch to Kerr's output. They had to match Neal Krause (crazy hops, big rebounder) and Kendin Carr (pure scorer/nice variety on offense) on Quick Release. Quick Release may be 0-1, but they'll be heard from soon. Props to LITB for taking home a huge win. We'll see who rolls up next week for them.

Hammers Win It on Koz 3 To Cap Comeback

Promo: Tommy Doyle's has the $10 pitchers that'll make your day if you're in the CAC Basketball league on Mon-Thurs in either Kendall or Harvard location. Not to mention, LNO is May 14th at Tommy Doyle's in Harvard, starting up at 6:30. Be there.

Recap: I'd like to thank myself for writing this before and hitting the banner on the right, accidentally deleting a crapperpiece. Ah well, like Step by Step, we'll make it better the second time around.

Mike Koziol was the man on this night. He not only grabbed 26 points as he hit four triples, but his GW triple with :13 was the difference-maker as the Hammers seized the lead after being down two and for most of the endgame. Kwesi "Q" Jones made a heady drive as his inside-out dish found a decently covered Koz, who found his opening and SMASH! Threeball for the win.

'Tis a shame for the Heartbreakers. Mike Ambra was damn near unguardable in this game with his inside moves throughout the contest. And when Mike Keohan nailed two triples late in this one, Rah and his heart looked to be made of stone. With Keohan's versatility and Brendan Burns' presence as the glue-guy in effect, the Heartbreakers had plenty o' chances to win this one. Heartbreakers look like a really good team that will make noise with their size. Just gotta get hot from outside and attack that rim more.

Nevertheless, an undermanned Hammers squad relied on Q's solid game driving and boarding (just gotta cool it down with the refs to avoid the late T) and sturdy performances from Alex Bruno and Ryan Patriquin. Hammers dial it up to 1-0 on the young season.

Big Tickets Defeat Magnum in Close Match Up

Welcome back, or just welcome, to the Spring 2010 CAC Basketball season!! For those of you who didn't notice, I am new on staff and am really looking forward to a great season!  Keeping my being new to the team in mind, the first few write ups will probably end up sounding a bit clinical and formal in nature, but trust me, that will change once I get to know ya'll! But I can say, my first week was a blast and I hope you are all as excited to get the season going as I am!

The fastest and most entertaining game of my Thursday night was the fourth and final game.  Switching gears from B2 East to B1 West, game four was a match up between Magnum and Big Tickets.

In a game that proved to be a close and solid competitive matchup from beginning to end, it ended almost as it had started.  Big Tickets had a small lead in the beginning and landed the 45 – 39 win behind several strong performances.

Ben Max filled up his stat sheet with 13 points, 11 boards, 3 assists and three steals.  And feeding off of Ben’s strong performance was Jeremy Margaitis.  Margaitis had 17 points, 6 boards, an assist and a steal to lead the Big Tickets.

And while they were on the losing end of this match up, Magnum had a few highlights themselves.  Brian Kimball had 14 points and 7 boards to lead Magnum, who will regroup and try to get back to .500 next week.

Now, don't forget to sign up for the message boards and get talking!  A couple other things to keep in mind, Tommy Doyles (our league sponsor) is now offering $10 Coors Lite Pitchers Monday - Thursday for any CAC Basketball members!  And speaking of Tommy Doyles, don't forget to mark May 14th on your calendar, League Night Out at TDs in Harvard Square!  See ya'll next week!
