Spring 2013: B1 5v5 League Champs: Watch Game Tight

WGT clinch spot in Unification Game
Icemen 62 Watch Game Tight 67

Icemen and Watch Game Tight went at it last night in the Cambridge YMCA gym for the right to be called B1 East Champion and a spot in the Unification Title Game against the West.

Matty Bells was in attendance and from the gate he told me this game should be a good one. Icemen was missing one of their bigs and he informed me that Pierce Larsson is the current all-time leading scorer at Tufts University. I\'ve seen the female version of the all-time leading scorer in Colleen Hart, and Larsson was just as impressive as she was. WGT forced the issue inside early and often to Larsson and he went to work as former BU guard Mike Schulze had the task of guarding him down low. WGT had the size and they took advantage of it, gaining a 34-27 lead at the half. Larsson lead all scores with 16 and was leading the charge towards a championship.

The second half showed no quit from the Icemen, who had to scratch and claw their way to keeping this game as close as possible. They were down to 5 guys when Ostrander banged knees with James and didn\'t look able to continue. Larsson was still beasting, getting to the line early and often as he went 13-14 from the stripe. Marquedant and Mark Schulze tried to keep their team as close as possible as they kept knocking down three after three once the foul game started under 2 minutes. They had a lot of opportunities but Scandalito and co. went on to win the East Championship by the score of 67-62. Congratulations to WGT and good luck in the Unification Game.
