OLD GOATS win 5v5 West - advance to unification playoff
Steamboats 38 Old Goats 59
All season has been building up to this face-off between the Goats (8-1) and the Boats (8-1). Sadly, the game didn\'t live up to the anticipation. Once again, the curse of the double-header playoff game reared its head - this time, it was the Boats who suffered. Having just come off a big win over the Boys and having a shorter-than-normal roster caused the Boats to look tired throughout most of the game. Indeed, the first half introduced two firsts for the Boats: 1. they were walking up the floor on offense 2. they didn\'t make any 3 pointers first half (even in the second half, they only average 25% from the arc). The Boats were even missing their foul shots (after going 9-11 in their first game, they went 2-8 this game). Since their speed and 3 point shooting are their strengths, this made the game fairly lopsided. Leng was the only bright spot for the Boats, scoring all 11 of his points in the half.
Meanwhile, the Goats were hot - having a much better first half than they had in their previous game. Z opened the game with a 3. K-O grabbed an offensive board and put it back in to go up 12-4 with 17 left. The Goats looked good - working the ball for the best shot. Malcolm\'s 3 put the Goats up 22-10 with 7 to go. They maintained this 10 point lead for the rest of the half, going into the half up 27-17.
The second half was better for the Boats. McK hit his first 3 with 13 to go to pull the Boats to 20-39. Martin followed with a 3 and it looked like the Boats might make a comeback, but don\'t call it a comeback. The Goats kept at it. McMahon and Malcolm controlled the glass. K-O led his team with 16 points. With all players contributing, the Goats epitomized team basketball: \"five players on the floor functioning as one single unit.\" The Goats deserve their championship after a well-played game and a well-played season. Perhaps the Boats will get their revenge next season?
