Winter 2011: B2 5v5 League Champs: Expendables

Expendables come back big in the 2nd half
    The Expendables 57 Just the Tip-Offs 43

    The Expendables - 57, Just The Tip-Offs - 43

These are the playoffs, and The Expendables got caught off guard. They were looking good coming into the playoffs, cruising through with some solid wins to get to the B2 West Finals. But Just The Tip-Offs didn\'t give them a chance to settle into the game at all. The Tips\' defense forced some turnovers early on -- hands in passing lanes, breaking up plays left & right, and taking charges. They never let The Expendables find their game in the first half. Ben Kaufman came out firing for the Tips, finishing the first half a blistering 5 for 7 from behind the arc. They must have done their scouting report, because they were able to keep The Expendables off the 3 point line (they were 0 for 6 in the first half). But just as importantly, the Tips clamped down their inside D as well & finished the first half up 30-20.

The second half started a bit slowly, with the Tips seemingly coasting a bit. They started missing their 3s, and nothing seemed to be falling for them. The Expendables started shutting down the paint on their end. Meanwhile The Expendables were figuring out their offense. They kept going to Jason Marshall down low with an undersized Nick Spiro unable to keep him from having his way. Marshall was the high scorer for The Expendables with 19, as he was able to force an easy layup or get to the line again and again. Combine Marshall\'s post game with Dee Thomas\'s lightning palms move (he finished with 4 steals in the game), and The Expendables went on a 24-4 run to start the second half, going up by 10 points before the Tips called a time out. But by then The Expendables had figured them out, and were able to settle into their game. The Tips-Offs tried to foul down the stretch, but they couldn\'t pick up any points to make up the gap, except for Ben Kaufman\'s 3-pointer with under a minute to go, but it wasn\'t enough.

Kudos to The Expendables for being able to adjust their game on the fly. And Just the Tip-Offs had a great run and a great season. The #1 & #2 seeds put on a great game. Good luck to The Expendables as they take on the best from B2 East next week.
