Spring 2005: B2 East League Champs: Ruckus

    ALS-TDF 43 Ripcord 37

    ALS Secures #1 Seed

In a battle for the #1 seed, ALS proved it was worthy of the title by handily beating Ripcord last night in a game dominated by Brad King. King did it all ñ hitting from the outside (17 points) and defense (5 steals). Balancing him out down low was Ken Thompson (11 points, 11 rebounds) and Matt Bell (8 points). Ripcord could never seem to get it closer than 4 points despite a good effort from the Iceman Jean Cadet (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Ian Whitney (10 points). Ripcord takes on Foot Clan next week while ALS takes on Biogen. These teams could meet again in the Finals if the seeds play through. Stay tuned.

Fama Bacon Whores 44  Ruckus 51

Chris ìMagic Manî Louis has his skills back from a long winter hibernation that trickled into the Spring (just like the weather). Thus, his nickname is back as well. The men of Ruckus are big, physical and can play the game together at most times. Fama also looked very good as well and seem to be gelling as a team now that they have the uniforms. Brian Merrill continues to emerge as a star in this league and scored 25 points and got help from Mike Reilly (10 points, 7 rebounds). But the balanced attack by the men of Ruckus ñ Louis (20 points, 7 rebounds) Gerry Arbens (17 points), Fritz (10 points, 8 rebounds) and Justin Wilson (8 rebounds) ñ kept Ruckus comfortably ahead most of the way.  A late rally by Fama fell short and Ruckus gets its 2nd win of the season while Fama drops to 0-3. Ruckus played so well it caused the Magic Man to post on the boards that B teams are just as good as any other team at CRFC. This sparked a lot of Board activity that, if nothing else, helped pass the time during the work day.

The Human Missile Fernando Vieira is also back on track. He emerged in this one with one of his best games of his CRFC career. His numbers were solid (15 points, 12 rebounds), but it was his defense and smart play that were the key in this one. BGENís numbers seem to be dwindling as fast as their stock price (sorry I am just bitter - losing money on BGEN stock options is something I have personal experience in so we are brethren in that regard). But Eiu Kim was on fire early hitting his first 4 shots. But ALS quickly gained control of the game behind Vieira, Ken Thompson (8 points, 12 rebounds) and ALS newcomer Matt Bell (15 points, 10 rebounds). ALS gets its first win of the season and Biogen drops to 0-3.

Expos 42  Funk Soul Brothers 50

With the permanent addition of GR Brickley, Funk may very well be one of the favorites to win it all. That is, if they can somehow remove the homing device planted in Kevin Walsh and Matt Sweetís head that somehow attracts these two to McCarron Airport every few weeks. The Expos could only field two players in this one, so the men of Ripcord graciously filled in. Thanks guys! But Funk was not to be denied in this one as Walshís triple double (unreal stat line of 17 points, 17 rebounds, 10 assists and 4 steals) and Brickley (10 points, 8 rebounds) worked the two man passing game to perfection. These two guys kept Funk ahead comfortably most of the way. A late run by the Expos behind sharpshooter Cliff Laro (18 points, 4 2nd half threes) fell short and Funk moves to 2-1 while the Expos drop to 1-1.

Foot Clan 63  Solid Gold 57

Despite being without Cullen Roberts (I know, I know - get over it, Wolverine), Foot Clan looked very good in this one. But as Wild On pointed out, they may have a power forward curse. First, Cullen Roberts decides not to rejoin the team last minute. Then Jeff McCarthy breaks a rib sneezing. And then, Marc Lo Ponte burns his hand on a stove. Hopefully, these guys will recover quickly and return to action soon. Despite being decimated by these injuries, Foot Clan managed to hold off the unbelievable play of Michael Louca. Seriously, this may have been on of the best shooting performances I have seen here at CRFC along with any game Poulos or McLaren plays in. Louca had 43 points on 5 threes and countless fade-away jumpers from the corner. But he proved to be a one man show as Foot Clan had the efforts of Jon Hanson (27 points, 6 rebounds), Dan Finkle (15 points) and Patrick Rooney (9 points, 13 rebounds). Foot Clan was never really in danger of losing this one as they improve to 2-1 while Solid Gold drops to 1-2, but we may have a new superstar on our hands. Stay tuned.

    Genzyme 63  Momenta 56

Now I know what is was like to be at the 1974 UCLA vs. Notre Dame game. It wasnít quite the 88 game winning streak, but Momentaís 12 game winning streak over its first two seasonís was a great feat nonetheless. But it had to end sometime (does it?) and Genzyme had the talent to do it. They took an early lead and bumped it to 10 with 10 minutes to play behind the great low post play of Kmiec (24 points, 9 rebounds). This guy is tough and once I learn his first name, I will be mentioned more often I am sure in these write-ups. Greg Miller also was playing well with 18 points, 8 rebounds along with Mike Bush (11 points, 12 rebounds). But you knew Momenta would make a run b/c they never, ever seem to get tired. Genzyme looked a little tired late in the 2nd half and Momenta took advantage and went on a run. Ed Finn had another fine game with 20 points and Mr. Everything Jeff Hrkach (11 points, 7 rebounds) kept his team focused as these were unchartered waters for Momenta. And behind AIís 2nd half scoring, Momenta managed to tie the game with a few minutes to play. But Genzyme kept its cool and hit some big buckets and free throws down the stretch and just like that the streak was over. Momenta had lost and a new unbeaten team has emerged. ìThey had more to lose since we're the new guys, and I think that gave us the upper hand,î commented Greg Miller after the game. "Looks like we just broke their unbeaten streak and have started our own!" said Genzyme star Danny Pucci. He may be right. Stay tuned.
