Fall 2009: B2 League Champs: Average Joes

FOT - Acosta Does It Again
    Genzyme 57 Average Joes 60

The more things change, the more they stay the same.  With all the expansion, multi-divisional leagues, and new teams, it all came down to Genzye and the Average Joes, two staples of the C.A.C. Basketball community.  The only surprise was that the Joes came in as the # 6 seed, but were playing some of their best basketball as a team in the post season. Sure they needed an Acosta 3 to bail them out with 1.8 seconds left last week, but a win is a win, and an upset is an upset...

So that left the top seeded Genzyme, who they battled to two epic finishes this season, but never while at full strength. Popular opinion was that, with a full team, the Joes should roll over the Zymites. I mean, 'everyone' knew that the only reason Gang Green was 8-2 (nay, 10-2) was because no one could field a full team at 5:30!!

In true Genzyme fashion this season, the game got off to the uglies of starts.  6-5 8 minutes in?! Sure, why not.  I didn't want to be kept awake up on the balcony or anything.  What's that, Big Bob Muse is the leading scorer 13 minutes into the game with 9 points? Ok, I can live with that, I like Big Bob, he was doing a great job on RoY Spann in the opening minutes.  Who said he shouldn't have been DPoY?! I will no admit that I didn't think Muse was going to be able to score a single point in this game going up against two guys his size that like to bang. I ate my words, oh they tasted so bitter, like A1 playoff defeat...

Any, back to the game.  The Joes used a 9-0 flurry before halftime to take a 30-28 lead. Yay, verily I say unto thee, any game in the 60s is no game Genzyme can win.  Basically, the pace was getting too fast, and they knew it.  But Five Hard Fouls threw in 7 key points (nothing but net 3!!) and Muse had 11 while Brad was waking up. Or shooting poorly, or whatever he was doing. At least he was crashing the glass.  Drama

Man how long is this write-up?! You bored yet?  In the second half, it was all Joes.  Sparkles and Acosta took over the offense. Spann was absolutely shut down by the DPoY (anyone still disagree with me? Check out Joff's and Spann's stat lines from the last two games, ALL MUSE!!) so they had to rely on the 3 ball. And there is one thing the Joes LOVE to do, it's rely on the 3!! Seriously, they thrive that way.  Joes up 11 (46-35) with 9 to go and I all but wrote off Zyme.

Silly Tibbs, playoffs are for comebacks!! The D dug in, Brad finally, FINALLY came alive and a 'quick' 11-0 run over 5 minutes tied this thing back up.  I can't get off the hook easily, can I?! But still Sparkles kept plugging away, hitting turnarounds, wide open 3s, Joes were going to win this game damnit!! Up 6 again somehow with 1:30 to go if they could have hit their freebies, you wouldn't see a F/OT in the title of this write-up. That was pages ago.  But no, they went 2-6 in that final 2 minutes.  Did I mention Muse hit a 3 yet? Yea, Muse hit a 3 to cut the lead in half.  Brad at the line, down 3, 10 seconds left, has to hit them both right? WRONG!! Just as Gerrity would have drawn it up, Brad misses the second free throw and FHF gets the game tying tip in. OOOOVVVVERTIME!!

You bored yet?! Well don't be, Joes score first in OT, Genzyme turnover. Gerrity STEAL and this thing is tied at 57. OT is so fast, clock stops only in the ifnal minute. Everyone's hacking, no one is getting to the line. So what do the Joes do? Dribble otu the last 30 seconds, fantastic.  Sparkles with a hard, clean pick, whipes out BMul and Acosta is standing wide open at the 3 point line. we just saw this last week, can we get it again!?! YES!! with 1 second leff, Acosta for 3!! He lives for these moments people!!

For the Joes, that means they've now taken out the # 1, # 2, and # 3 seed in the B2 East on their way to the Unificiation Final Four!  I'll let Westy know when the next game will be, don't worry, only two more to go! First the winner of the B2 South (still TBD) then the winner of the North/West from Monday nights! B2, where you've got to win 5 playoff games to get on a banner!!

Teams, B2 is filling up! The East on Tuesday at CAC is already full, but the other leagues still have some spots left.  Send me an email CACBasketball@gmail.com if you want to play in the Winter '10 League!

    Genzyme Raids Mullets

News: Lots to cover if you haven't been following along!

League Night Out: Satuday October 31st in conjunction with Tommy Doyle's!

    3v3: Nov 14th & Nov 15th - Winners get a free 4v4 League for the Winter '10 Season!

New Blogs: LOTS of good stuff, here, here, here, and here

Intro: No JaySar for the Mullets, no Dennis for the Mullets, no Chris Adams for the Mullets, do they have a chance?!  It doesn't look good for them.  But if anything can save them it will be Brad's teeny tiny shorts. Hopefully they'll just squeeze the life right out of him and he'll be useless.

Game ReCap: Let the record show that the Mullets had a lead in this game, 4-2, just 5 minutes into the action.  Bolger and Korba are both hitting the glass hard againsta much bigger Genzyme squad to keep this game close.

ìThat guy is big!î Yes, he's not named 'Big Bob' Muse because he's built like Greezey (who has dropped some nice dimes early).

Uh, in case you guys hadn't heard, Brad's the defending B2 East MVP.  Dude's averaging about 31 points a game this season, get a hand up! You can't give him uncontested 3s!!

Deep for 3!!! He's got no hesitation coming in off the bench, that's what I like to see!

Mullets clawing their way back in it as USok is finally getting the layups to fall. That was killing them early, the fact that no one could finish inside. Bolger stealing BMul's Cookies!! With Dennis 2 for 2 from the land of beyond, this is just a 2 point game suddenly!

Dan O and Gerrity are tied at 4 at half. Oh right, it's a team game, brad's 19 paces Zyme to a 5 point lead.

Man this would be a completely different game with the Born Gamer in attendance.  Or the real USok.  Seriously man, only 2 attempted 3s so far?

Fun Fact: We've got 12 minutes to go in this one. If BMul is the next guy to score a bucket, he'll have hit as many total shots as every other player (all 11 of them) combined.

WAY to ruin that for everyone MUSE!!

Just as USok starts to heat up from downtown 3 for his last 4, Brad remembers the team isn't exactly double-teaming him, and slices his way to the hole. A couple timely buckets by Muse and Joe J, this thing is back to double figures.

Final Thoughts: No amount of USok bombing was able to get the Mullets back into this one without their fearless, but very absent, leader.  Where's his commitment?!  I blame Tara for this whole thing.

No Longer Perfect, Joes Knock Off Cleary Club

News: Lots to cover if you haven't been following along!

League Night Out: Satuday October 31st in conjunction with Tommy Doyle's!

    3v3: Nov 14th & Nov 15th - Winners get a free 4v4 League for the Winter '10 Season!

New Blogs: LOTS of good stuff, here, here, here, and here

Intro: When was the last time we had a 6v6 game this season!? Full benches in what should be the matchup of the week.  And I'm not just talking about B2, I mean it might be the best game of the entire week.

Game ReCap: Acosta starting the game where he belongs, on the bench! The Joes have their whole squad for the first time this season.  Let's see if it helps them take down the only undefeated squad left.

Don't worry, I see you and your assist Roly!

Frantic pace to the start of this game.  Everyone's trying to get all their points at once.  Fellas, you can only score between 1 and 3 points on a given shot. Take a deep breath. It's a long game.

Cleary Club loves this fast pace that the Joes have set.  With Captain Ken back in the fold they're making the right decisions on the break, getting lots of open, easy buckets.

Spann is doing work inside on the block.  Just dump it down to the big fella! No you couldn't do that, could you Joes. You guys just love the 3s too much! That will be the only reason they lose this game.  I'm saying it now.  Too many 3s (over 20, 25?) will be what prevents them from winning this thing.  They just have so much size inside, use it! Westy is banging the O boards, Spann can't be stopped, and Dan is biding his time.  Somehow Cleary Club up double digits.

At the break we've got CC up 7.  Roly pacing the offense with 12 points, Ken has the edge in assists over DEE 5 ñ 4.

Average Joes quickly make this a game in the second half.  They're getting after O boards. CC was able to keep them off the glass in the first. Yet just like a bigger, stronger Oline, they're wearing down a smaller core of linemen and 'backers.

Watson 3 for 4 from downtown as Cleary Club tries to get the momentum back.

Joes creeping up on that 20 attempt mark, but it doesn't matter as Jeff and Dan and cleaning up the mess! Joes up 9 with 10 to play.  It took Cleary Club 13+ minutes to score 10 points in the second frame (and don't even think of blaming the hoop, they're going towards the good rim'.) That's not going to win you many ball games.

How have I managed to go this long without mentioning Drama or Sparkles? Both guys have stepped their game up in the second half as the Joes are looking to pull the upset victory.

Final Thoughts: And down goes Cleary Club! This league is just too balanced and dangerous to have an undefeated for too long. Is this the game the Joes use to turn the corner and become a conteder this season?! OR, are they going to fade back into bolivian. I still want to know how they haven't gotten these uniforms yet

We can all agree that Kessell is the girl, right?!

    Moorriors Blow By CPP

News: Lots to cover if you haven't been following along!

League Night Out: Satuday October 31st in conjunction with Tommy Doyle's!

    3v3: Nov 14th & Nov 15th - Winners get a free 4v4 League for the Winter '10 Season!

New Blogs: LOTS of good stuff, here, here, here, and here

Intro: No Chopko, no Charm, and it's going to be tough for CPP to hang tough in this one.  They'll give it a hell of a shot, I know that but the Moorriors are trying to snap a 3 game losing streak here, they're going to show no mercy.

Game ReCap: Jamil was here 15 minutes early, how is he not suited up yet? Moorriors better wake-up! CPP capitalizes on their first 3 possessions, that they get shots off on, and jumps to a 6-1 lead.

It's really quiet in here, why is that?! Oh right, no DocSpauld on the sideline. Zack pacing the offense early, but like Genzyme in the early game, I feel like they're taking their opponent too lightly in the early stages of the game.

The Eraser living up to his nickname by swatting, and jumping at, everything that goes up near him

Gosh with the corner Js and Shyam with the corner 3 to keep this thing close!

Man if the Moorriors could buy a free throw they'd be running away with this thing.

I look down to try to get my Internet working for two seconds and all of a sudden, this happens

Yea, the Moorriors just busted this game wide open.  Zack will NOT miss from downtown.  Dre is getting every offensive tip in, Jamil is swiping the ball away from every handler, and Joff is finishing inside.  I did NOT see that coming.

Seriously, the lead has gone from 20, to 30 and is now pushing 40.

Final Thoughts: Box score pretty much sums it up.  Moorriors emphatically snap the steak.

Intro: Man where is Mike D?! He WANTED all the late games and yet he can't show up? For shame...

Game ReCap: Couple quick strikes for Nugent against Q. That will surely get his confidence up. Hey! Don't call me Shirley!

Chriss O for 3!! Is this game over yet?! I'm trying not to dig back into my bag of candy. It is 10 PM and I'm trying to watch my weight here.  Oh how you tempt me, delicious bag of chocolate.

Oh man this should be a good battle between Nugent and Q.  Neither guy is going to give in and both want to help their team win.

Have you heard that there's no longer an unbeaten in the B2 East? If you followed me on twitter you already would have (www.twitter.com/cacbasketball)

Or if you followed along on facebook (http://www.facebook.com/notifications.php#/group.php?gid=9338726212) you'd know all about the upcoming 3v3 tournament (in case you're not paying attention here [www.cacbasketball.com/3v3.php])

OR you could just follow along on the message boards here (www.cacbasketball.com/index.php)

Basically what I'm trying to say is that we've got a lot going on, but you've got a whole lot of ways to keep up with all things C.A.C.  So you've got no excuses for not knowing about League Night Out, or anything in general!

And now back to your regularly scheduled game.

No Q, i was not trying to disrupt your freethrow, I just dropped my hand in frustration.  No one ever listens to me when I tell them hhow many fouls they have.  But then they always want to know! Listen! I'm loud!!

Rob Kulch is picking up the slack for N.W.O., but they can't pull away.  Dubois is getting it done, Mike is chipping in now that he's (sorta) staying out of foul trouble, they're not a team to give up easily!

N.W.O. Making a killing at the FT line tonight.  With an 6 point lead they've hit 11 freebies.  Very important!!

Dubois pulls Alnylium back in it with a bevy of 3s!

Every time I have a stinking late game, it's destined for over time isn't it?! Dubois just WILL NOT MISS as the clock winds down, while N.W.O. slowed their offense down too soon and now cant get it jump started quickly enough to hold them off! OVERTIME!!

Alnylium had the ball first, but couldn't score first, N.W.O. up 5. But they were just here, like last week, so don't expect them to just cave in.  They just can't come all the way back...

Final Thoughts: Man it seems like every week Alnylium is pushing games into OT.  Things could be a whole lot different for them record wise, that's for sure, but they're putting up a hell of a fight every week.  Keep chipping away boys, you're going to be the team that no one wants to play come playoff time! Big win for N.W.O., especially without Mike D, as they move into a first place tie with Cleary Club. Do they deserve to be there with a forfeit win over the Moorriors?! I don't know, but that's where they are. Who's going to unseat them?
