Winter 2007: B2 League Champs: Mullets

Mullets Survive Again In Double OT
    Mullets 84 BALCO 78

When we couldn't even agree on what ball to use before the opening tip, I knew this game would be spirited and contentious. But that is what CRFC hoops is all about, especially when you have the history that BALCO and the Mullets have with each other. Throw in a ref who prefers to let them play and Jay Sar in the stands looming above, and you have a potential riot on your hands. Luckily, these guys kept their cool despite 39 fouls (20/19 edge for Mullets) and 46 free throws (24/22 edge for BALCO) in only 46 minutes of play, with three guys fouling out (Chang and Colanto for the Mullets, Pellitier for BALCO). Where do I begin? Well, BALCO took advantage of the often sleepy Mullets to open the game with superior execution, lead as always by Everyone's Favorite Point Guard Matty O. Matty was masterful in this one as he dropped 33 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and dished out 7 assists. We should use his ball every game he plays!!! BALCO was easily handling the Mullets defense, which at times was porous as they forgot all about Steve Cassidy's corner jumper (17 points) and The Big Fish Matt Gill's three point threat (17 points). Not sure how many times I heard Usok say "Don't leave him" but whatever it was, it was too much. And I love when he yells at Colanto, because Dave just gives him this look like "Shut the &%$# up, Usok." Anyway, BALCO was cruising as they built on a nice lead at halftime to open up a huge 16 point lead behind Matty Oís masterful play. Canít say enough about the game he played last night. Somebody needed to step up for the Mullets and that is when the MVP of the league Boris Paskalev did just that. Threes, drives, free throws - all to the tune of 46 points and 22 rebounds, including 12 of 16 from the line. He is no Dirk as this league's MVP stepped it up big exactly when his team needed him (I wrote this before Dirk rallied the Mavs back from down 9, to which I am disgusted). And why is he complaining so much anyway? He gets to the line 16 times in this game and he wants more? What else can I do for you, Boris? Can I grab you a Gatorade during timeouts? Can I tie your laces if they come undone? Anyway, Boris lead his team all the way back with a furious and frenetic late 2nd half rally that had everyone involved dizzy. Oh, I can't forget Mike D in all of this b/c at one point he turned to Usok and said ever so politely "I am on, give me the ball." And Usok obliged, probably b/c Mike D is the only one who pronounces the O in his name instead of replacing it with another u. He is so considerate, that Mike D. Mike D hit consecutive huge threes to cap off a monster game (20 points, 13 rebounds). But with under a minute to play, BALCO hung on to a slim lead behind some big freebies by Cassidy and Gill, and some huge Matty O jumpers. But down only three, the Mullets came down the floor and with just under 10 seconds to play. Boris then hits a huge three ball to send the game into overtime. Unreal!!! Into the 1st overtime we went as the Mullets looked to take control with another big three from Mike D and Boris. But down three with under 10 seconds to play, the roles were reversed and this time Matty O came down and nailed an unbelievably tough three to send the game into double overtime. Can you ask for a better game? In the 2nd OT, everyone was running out of gas b/c there were non subs left due to the hacking going on throughout. The Mullets took the lead with some freebies, but BALCO bounced right back hitting their own freebies (Reilly hit two huge ones). But the Mullets hit on two key possessions down the stretch and BALCO missed on their next two and that was just enough of a spread to seal the deal for the Mullets. Phenomenal game to cap off the East season and the Mullets look to get the B2 title tonight with a win over the West champ IE. Can Usok get his picture up on our site a record 5 times? I for one am sick of looking at his mug on our website (I cant say the same for Mike D -he is the face of the league). And congrats to BALCO on a great season and an unbelievable playoff run. Not sure what the off-season (1 week?) will bring, but hope to see them all back next season.
