Winter 2011: B2 League Champs: Wheels of Steel

    Wheels Survives and Advances
Wheels of Steel 62 The Bomb Squad 59

Yes, I know, if O\'cal had covered these games the write-ups would have been up by midnight.  But do I look like I have a uni-brow? I tried to get him to cover these, believe me.

But then I would have missed out on a pretty excited pair of games.  In the opener of the B2 South semi-finals, the top seeded Wheels of Steel faced a tough test against the Bomb Squad.  I was told thatI shouldn\'t judge Bomb Squad by their record, they play incredibly well when they have a full squad.

Well everyone struggled in the opening minutes getting used to playing at Wall Ball Arena.  It\'s a different beast, the walls are really, really close.  For the Squad, Sam had no trouble adapting off the bat. He took the ball to the hole, took the wall slam in stride and jogged back on D ready to get a steal and do it again.  He paced the offense with 9 first half points.  Zouk was all over the place, sprinting for boards, getting putbacks, but foul trouble limited his minutes late in the first half and to start the second.  No biggie, Qym and Raf stepped their games up and produced to keep Bomb Squad upset-minded.

The Squad let by 7 at the break and it looked like we had yet another upset in the making.  The South had THREE in the first round last week.  The rest of the B2 leagues combined only had TWO combined! And they say parity is dead.

Anyway, this Wheels of Steel teams reminds me of the Scalopini team that came out of the B2 South in the Spring 2010 season. Bunch of guys that don\'t wow you individually, but play well together and have a jumpshooting point guard to pace the offense. They came out of the South and shocked the East before winning the Uni game and I could see the same thing happening this season.

Roberts and Monroe can control the boards, Jamie and Nick chip in a ton of hustle, and no one is really sure what Rory does, but he\'s there, cracking jokes about the Breakfast Club and his Co-Ed team, at least he brings something to the table.  Everyone does something well and that\'s the sign of a good championship squad!

Down 7 with 7 to go, that jumpshooting pg, Tristan, hit back to back 3s to make this thing a gamel  It was the start of a 13-2 run that gave Wheels control of the game.  Rory hit 3 of 4 from the stripe down the stretch, but Bomb Squad still got the ball back with a chance to tie.  Thankfully for all involved (ok just me) we avoided another OT game (for now).

Wheels will play at 7:20 next week against the Big Dilemma for the right to play in the B2 Unification Final Four!

Wheels Are Going to the Dance as a #1 seed...better hope for better luck than the NCAAs

For the third straight week, no Rugga and we all have to share the loss.  Rumor has it, the flight home got cancelled, but I aint believing that.  Never believe those rat bastard lawyers.

In the first half, IHML was treating Rory like a Lepor or someone with the DieSlow because No ONE was around him.  And YES, Rory made them pay with jumper after jumper.  The transformation to a 70% shooter from the floor was nothing short of when Steve Urkel transformed into Stephan.  He was that good tonight.

Despite a Dobos trey (hope you feel better Scott!), IHML struggled to keep pace with Wheels, who continued to jump out to a 20pt lead behind a great dish from Roberts to the Beard, some Tristan non backboard tapping buckets, and an instant offense juuuuuuust the tip in from Monroe.

IHML tried to finish strong as AJ burried 2 straight jumpers and Trup added a couple acrobatic drives.

In the 2nd half, the Wheels continued to roll as Jamie hit MM with a bullet no look dish for an easy 2 and Roberts busted one of the longest coast to coast drives.  Someone must have stopped at the tolls and didnt have an easy pass.

The Haas Saas would get picante and start draining treys and his midrange, but it was too little too late.

Like so many other nights, this game ended with Rory on his back and 2 guys trying to get after the ball between his legs...

Stay tuned for the schedule next week via the website and email.  Best of luck to all.

Double Down- Big D Drinks Milkshake

As expected, the Big D, with Quincy this week busted out the ole steamroller and are pumping right through the Cross to the Playoffs.

Right off the bat, Bredan's touch tip (no homo) to Andy set the tone for the Big D's dominance.  After a couple QUICK buckets by Q, it got ugly.

But dont tell that to Mike Trev, who for the umpteenth straight week made the hustle play of the week, laying out  for a loose ball to try and pump his boys up.  He should have tried hookers.  Hookers always motivate men better.

Shiggy started adding to the lead with not 1, but 2 step in treys.  After buckets by Justin, Mark, and a YOKE by Quincy, it was a 20pt lead.

In the 2nd half, the Cross showed signs of life as the Two mikes had two great looks to Harold.  Not only that, Aaron found his trey ball with 3 in the half.

But the Big D was scoring at will.  If this were a fight, the towel would have been thrown in at the 10 minute mark.

Stay tuned to the website and email about playoffs next week.

    The Bomb Squad 46  I'm Nasty 68

Who are these guys and what have they done with Im Nasty?

What a difference a week can make, although the Bomb Squad was without JHov, so that could account for some of the 20 pt victory, but Nasty looked primed for the playoffs after tonight.

And for no extra charge I got all dolled up for you guys with my Youth Medium sweater, looking like the Tool that you have all known to come to love, admire, and hope that some day I do get laid...by a chick...consentually.

In the first half, Raf Rod had his boys locked in as my man was punishing people, Mark Jackson style, in the post.  Soon after Z barrelled through the paint with an unbelieveable lefty finger roll that had me shaking my head in disbelief.

But it was Nasty's night.  It was a good night for the Camp as Glenn got things going for Nasty with some FTs and, yes, some TIGER BLOOD D.

Throughout the game, Nasty took turns setting everyone up, coming off screens, and even setting Dee up for a catch and shoot trey at the half to give Nasty a double digit lead going into the break.

The Bomb Squad would try to make a run as Ty started a rally with a great pick, and dish to Qym, and Raf had a thunderous BLOCK that must have fractured his hand.  The last great defensive play was a Qym Block and dish to Sam, who finished with a nifty "look off" drive.

That was as good as it would get.  Mike, Elvis, Matt and Bobby each picked apart the Squad with a Princeton like flex offense that had everyone sharing the rock and scoring.  I thought it was like Nasty was trying too hard to show everyone they can pass, but either way, maybe they have turned the corner and can FINALLY make a run this season.

Stay tuned to email and website for schedule next week.

News Team Finds a Way and Continues to discriminate against FTs and Layups

The News Team barely squeeked by, but a W is a W.

In the first half, Shea started the game much more assertive than any of the previous game as he drilled a pull up, only to be followed by Cock The Hammer's duce.  The News Team steadily managed to build a double digit lead as 3 balls from Shea, Hammer and Frut all found their mark.

For AP, again, they struggled to make shots.  They were getting good looks and sharing the rock, the ball just wasnt going in, which is a good indicator for next week as I believe they play the News Team for a 3rd straight week...Got to Love CAC.

In the 2nd half, AP decided to man up big time as Henricksen and Big Vig ignited the boys with some block parties.  Then, they went on a 10-0 run as Scott drilled a pull up, Old Money Glumac found Big VIg for a trey, which was followed by a Tino 3, and finally a GLow mid range jumper to tie the game.

But "Call Me When ITs Crunch Time" Dan Warren stepped up and buried 2 treys (shaking off the cobwebs from an earlier great screen for Shea that nearly decapitated him).

AP would battle back and the NEws Team would help them out by missing some FTs and layups, but in the end, the News Team pulled it off.

Stay tuned to the website and your emails for schedule next week.
