XJV Steals C League Title in Double OT Instant Classic
Expos 55 XJV 56
What a thriller we had last night, as the Expos were knocked off by XJV in the C League Final in Double Overtime. This game was an instant classic from the tip with XJV battling hard and trying to keep pace with Jamil Ball's (38 points, 13 boards) offensive fireworks. The heavily favored Expos squad had to play this game without their Window Cleaner (Brian Gelow) and you could tell that it effected them from the outset. XJV was staying in the game by hitting the glass hard trying to limit the Expos second chance opportunities. Pat Bugbee (13 points) and Doug Bisson (10 points) were keeping the game close with their offensive persistancy in the first half. Jamil was constantly frustrated by a collapsing defense that forced him into tough, low percentage shots. The game was tied at halftime, as neither team could build much of a lead with the hard hitting physical style.
In the second half it looked like Jamil had taken over for good. He was getting to the line at will, he was nailing 3s with ease and taking it to the rack. Despite the long odds, their opponents never gave in. Jerome and Chris wouldn't let XJV go down without a fight and as the game wore on, they were more and more physical with Jamil. It didn't seem to matter, because with a minute left in the game, he had the Expos up 5 and it looked like XJV's upset bid was dashed. But when the going got tough, XJV resonded with a fast break steal and a long range three to tie the game with 17 seconds left. Neither team could convert on their last possession, and we were headed to OT tied at 47. In the first OT, both teams traded baskets until Jamil went to the line with a chance to put his team up. He couldn't convert on the 1&1, so we were off to double overtime! Again the team's traded baskets and again Jamil went to the line with a chance to put his team up two possessions. But he couldn't do it and XJV got a couple quick scored to go up one. As Jamil brought the ball down for a potential game winner, his pocket got picked and XJV ran out the clock to pull off the colossal upset! An excellent season by the Expos falls just short of their goal and XJV takes the Fall 07 C League Title!
