Fall 2010: C League Champs: Steamboats Too

Too Much Dinh Thuy As SB II Grabs Another C Title
    Steamboats Too 57 Steamboats 42

    • Only one ref in the C Final, but Mazzy is definitely up to the challenge. He actually runs the floor while making up the non-existent three point line at the same time. Do you know how hard that is?!
    • JRod is on hand for video duties, but as always, the Steamboats teams travel with their own film crew.
    • And as a special bonus, the CAC photog is also on hand. Yet no shots of the CAC crack staff for posterity? I am hurt.
    • So it's the Steamboats (the originals) versus the Steamboats Too. Last time I reffed this league, I believe Steamboats Too won the title behind a couple of Dinh's free throws after a gratuitous foul call in the backcourt as time was winding down. I also remember a buzzer beater three by David at some point too. That was a magical season.
    • Since then, II has added the very vocal Gary Fan (hardly recognized him with hair) and the original Steamboats added Chris Mudarri Sour from the Cha-Ching franchise (didn't recognize him at all, man I am getting old – maybe that's why I wasn't photographed?).
    • Steamboats start off hot as they jump to a 16-8 lead. The Duece look lifeless as the originals are running around them in circles. And nobody is faster than Martin and Leng running the break. Things are looking good for the originals.
    • But enter Thuy into the game (who had my vote for game MVP, but I was outvoted by the staff). Thuy sparked a 12-0 run with two straight threes to give the Deuce a 4 point lead in a matter of minutes. He single-handedly energized this team and got them going.
    • Timeout Steamboats as they need to figure out a way to stop the bleeding.
    • The Deuce extends its lead to 9 at the break (30-21) behind Thuy and two three balls from Ricky the Dragon.
    • Congrats to the Duece on another C title. I lost count but I think that makes it three C titles?
    • Word just in that Favre isn't starting tonight. Good riddance.
    • During the break, I had a decent debate with JRod over 3D TV. My bet is they will be gone by next Xmas. Who wants to wear glasses while they are watching TV? JRod calls me a fuddy-duddy and "un-American" for not having an iPhone. Luckily, halftime is only 1.5 minutes long and the conversation had to end.
    • Steamboat hung around for most of the second half behind Chi's three 3 pointers to keep the game close. They managed to keep the game within striking distance most of the way.
    • But each time they got close, the Deuce came up with a huge play. Usually, that play was Gary Fan setting a legal (usually) high screen for Dinh, who drove and scored on floaters. Dinh was unstoppable in the 2nd half which lead to his MVP award (I got you, Thuy!). Flash also had a huge bucket down the stretch on a fast-break.
    • Steamboats couldn’t get any close than 5 and their attempts to make this a free throw contest failed and the buzzer sounded.
    • Solid year (from what I hear) by the Steamboats but they fell short in the Finals. But these two teams dominate this league and it may be time to rename the C league to the Sea League (get it, Steamboats are usually found in the sea?). Tibbs, whaddya think?
    • Someone should really write the story of the Steamboat/Steamboat TOO rivalry and their history at the CAC. I'd also really like to know where the party was after the game because I don’t think Tommy Doyle's could hold both teams plus all the fans!
    • Happy Holidays, everyone!
