Winter 2013: Co-Ed 5v5 B League Champs: Gunz N Butta

    Gunz N Butta take Co-Ed B Championship

What’s this? I didn’t post the write-ups from the semis last week?! I SWORE I did that on Wednesday. God Dammit I’m as bad as Loubins aren’t I? I’ll go back and find and post them as soon as I’m done this one.

Anyway, I was filming last night, but Ian Rubiano was kind enough to take stats and jot down a few notes for me to do this write-up too. Coming into this game, GNB hung 128 points (a new CoEd record?) on Shots, while WUD had to comeback against a tough and determined Wolfies squad to make the Finals. As I saw last week, WUD really knows how to move the ball against a zone and get open looks (as the finals video will prove). But GNB was determined not to let WUD hang around early. Matt just wouldn’t miss and got all kinds of friendly bounces from the allegedly unforgiving Winter Hill School rims.

They sprinted out to a 12-3 lead and seemed to think the game was already over. For the next couple minutes they launched long 3s, didn’t get defensive rebounds and looked indifferent on defense. That allowed WUD to climb back into it.

March and Jeremy had it going from downtown and this team just doesn’t panic. They ripped off an 18-0 run to completely erase the hole and start this game over. They had a plan (play solid D, take only open Js) and they stuck to it to great effect.

But Carla and Van both answered with 3s of their own, Dante turned up the speed and GNB took back the lead before halftime, 27-26. I don’t think GNB expected this much of a fight after cruising through the regular season at 8-1 and having the experience of playing in last season’s championship game.

They started the second half with another 12-3 spurt like they started the game as Dante really applied pressure in transition. Every rebound he was heading down the court waiting for a good outlet pass. His speed got him easy looks under the hoop and set up Nicole for a big 3.

But again WUD responded. This team just never quit. Trailing by 10 to a team that can put up 100 points didn’t faze them at all. Ronnie had his tweener shot falling (between a layup and a 3 – aka midrange, I just like to type tweener and piss off my spell check ok?!), Jeremy found open players and WUD would tie the game at 47 all with 8 minutes to go.

Unfortunately, GUNZ went bananas from 3 point range

    See what I did there?

Dante hit a 3, Carla hit one and Nicole hit one too on back to back to BACK possessions while WUD went scoreless to dig into yet another hole. There’d be no coming out of this one as a couple GNB steals led to fast break buckets to wrap this game up.

Hell of an effort by Jeremy and Co in the Finals, but in the end Gunz N Butta won the second CoEd B championship 70-57. Congrats to all the teams on a great season!
