3R kicks off the season with a win
3R 68 Super Mario Bros 49
What’s up all, I’m Tibbs your MC for the season. I met many of you on the balcony for the first time last night and I’ve got to say, it was a pleasure to be back on the balcony again. Before we dive into the week 1 action, let’s take care of some housekeeping

Game 1 of a new season is always a bit of a feeling out process. Game 1 of a new season of a new league?!?! Now that’s a rare sight to behold as CAC Basketball wraps up its 19th year of existence. It was an honor and a privilege for me, Lydia our ref and 3R, who got the first win.
To start both teams were shorthanded. No Skeens, No Kurt Henderson and no Mario James to start the night. 3R eked out an early lead thanks to 4th round pick Mathieu Despots hitting the hole hard. Team Salem (seriously, guys get me a new team name before I rename you something terrible like Feral Hogs or Weird CAC Twitter [i might be on twitter too much]) had no idea what they were doing on D and couldn’t buy a bucket to start the game. Now, not knowing what you’re doing on D with a bunch of dudes you’ve never met before? that’s acceptable for the first couple weeks. Not being able to hit a 3 (started the game 0-12 as a team) should be fixable a lot more quickly.
Anyway, the reinforcements all rolled in about 10 minutes into the game and they were much needed on both ends. Skeens came in and started picking on Team Salem’s defensive confusion by throwing some K-Love outlet passes down the court at every opportunity. Sure a lot of them just ended up as missed layups but he was really stretching the D. Kurt went to work on the glass and 3R would end up with a 26 to 15 rebounding edge in the first half. Honestly, if you go back and watch the tape (which, I guess you could since we have the drop cam up there, but am I paying for the 30 day history? I should check on that. I should also ramble less) it felt like 3R had an even bigger advantage on the boards. It seemed like every loose ball and long rebound went their way.
For Team Salem, Mario James is one of my new favorite players. The lefty guard attacked the rim relentlessly even in the face of 2 and 3 and 4 defenders. He did what he could as a one make wrecking crew.
3R led 26-15 at the break and seemed to think they would coast to a win. Team Salem had other ideas, Mario kicked off an 8-0 run to star the second half before 3R could regroup. Punched in the mouth and what did 3R do? They punched right back!
Despots kept getting layups and refused not to shine. Kid poured in 22 points and non-verbally slapped every draft skeptic and franchise that passed on him round and round. Skeens scored when he decided to keep the ball instead of dish and 3R answered with an 11-3 run to take back control of the game. It was a double digit lead the rest of the way from that point on.
With the game decided, Dru Roberts and Carlos Rivadiniero figured that the final 5 minutes were when they’d pour in all their points. It was a 3 point barrage the rest of the way, and Salem had to be wondering where that shooting was earlier in the night.
Like I always say about week 1, your team is never as good, or as bad, as it first appears. The kinks will work themselves out after a couple weeks, you’ll get used to this funky little place we call Wall Ball Arena.
