Zak beats the buzzer to give SDARMAJ 17 Title
Stop Drop And Roll Me a J 73 Lambda Epsilon Omega 70
The 2017 SDL Final lived up to the hype, as the game came down to the final seconds. Zak swished a shot just inside of half court with the buzzer sounding, which gave Stop Drop And Roll Me A J a 73-70 victory over Lambda Epsilon Omega, and the SDL title.
Let’s fast forward to the final minute of the game. LEO led 70-68, and SDARMAJ had possession. LEO was playing tight defense, and it did not look like SDARMAJ was going to get a good look. Surprisingly, Zak found EJ on a back cut in the middle of the paint, and EJ finished a contested lefty layup over Mike Sydorko, which tied the game 70-70 with 30 seconds left.
LEO had a chance to take the last shot in regulation, but did not do so. With less than 10 seconds left, Matt Leone started to drive to the left corner, and thought he drew contact at the three point line. Leone decided to shoot a three ball from the corner, but there was no whistle. The Leone shot never had a chance of going in, as Zak corralled the rebound, and immediately called SDARMAJ’s final timeout with 4.8 seconds left on the clock.
SDARMAJ inbounded the ball to Zak. Zak took one dribble and Sydorko tipped the ball. It looked as though Sydorko may steal the ball and give LEO a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but somehow the ball bounced straight up, very high, where Zak was easily able to retain possession of the ball, while Sydorko ran by. Once Zak had the ball back, he turned and ended up being wide open just inside of half court. Zak took the deep shot, and all you heard was the buzzer and the bottom of the net.
Now let’s rewind to the beginning of the game. SDARMAJ came out on fire, especially Jon Daley. Daley created an and-1 opportunity, as he finished a strong right handed layup in the lane, after taking contact from Matt Meservey. Daley completed the and-1 from the line, which gave his team an early 10-6 lead, (17:00 mark).
Leone answered for LEO, as he connected from deep off a hand off, and cut the deficit to three, (9-12 at 16:00 mark). It was all Daley in the first half though, as he drilled a straight-away three, and pumped SDARMAJ’s lead to six, (23-17 at 12:00 mark). Zak made a tough reverse layup, which kept SDARMAJ’s lead at six, (31-25 at 9:00 mark).
LEO then answered with an 8-0 run, and took their first lead of the game, (33-31 at 6:00 mark). Sydorko was responsible for the first six points of the run, and Dustin Williams finished a right handed layup to complete the run.
SDARMAJ decided to call timeout once they fell behind. It was a good timeout for SDARMAJ, as they finished the final six minutes of the half on a 13-6 run, and took a 44-39 lead into the half.
The game felt like it had a chance to get into the 100’s, as both teams were executing their offense perfectly. Well, the second half tightened up a lot.
Leone opened the half with a three for LEO, which cut the deficit to two, (42-44 at 17:20 mark). LEO opened the half on a 6-1 run, but EJ would stop the bleeding for SDARMAJ, as he connected from deep and tied the game 48-48, (16:00 mark).
Cheese responded for LEO, as he hit a half lefty hook in the lane, which gave his team a 50-48 lead, (15:35 mark). Zak answered for SDARMAJ, and he connected from three, and gave his team the lead back, (51-50 at 15:15 mark).
For the next 7 minutes of play, LEO controlled the pace of play. The game slowed down, and LEO ended up taking their biggest lead of the game 63-57, (at 8:00 mark), after Cheese finished a fast break layup off a steal by Dustin.
It felt as though LEO’s lead would only grow from this point, but SDARMAJ had different plans. Zak created an and-1 opportunity after finishing at the rim. Zak completed to three-point play, which cut the deficit to three, (60-63 at 7:30 mark).
Leone answered for LEO, as he hit a turnaround jumper in the lane, which pushed their lead back to five, (65-60 at 7:00 mark). EJ then responded for SDARMAJ, as he made a lefty hook in the lane, and cut the deficit back to three, (62-65 at 6:30 mark).
The final 6:30 of the game was really a back and forth grind, as expected, and we all know how the final minute ended. It was really a well played game by both teams, and it was fun to cover.
GRADES
SDARMAJ:
Zak, (A): Zak finished the game with great numbers, (27 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists), and hit the game-winner. I don’t think he shot as good as he would have liked from three, and try to force the issue a little too much from time-to-time. Never the less, he deserves an A.
Daley, (A-): Daley really played a well as he finished with 22 points and three blocks. He went a little cold in the second half, as 16 of his points came in the first half, but played had to chase around Leone all game as well.
Ghost, (B+): Ghost was as solid as a rock. He finished the game with 12 points.
EJ, (A): The captain was the spark his team needed. He did most of his damage in the second half, when it means the most. He also tied the game up at 30 seconds, that is an A effort.
Alan, (B-): Alan was not much of a factor in this one, but no one can get that bad of a grade on the winning side.
LEO:
Leone, (B+): Leone had a rather quiet first half, but really picked up his play in the second half. He did not shoot particularly well from deep, but his offensive surge in the second half was a big reason why LEO surged ahead.
Meservey, (C): Meservery had a game he would like to forget. Did not shoot well from the field, but did end up with a team-high of 4 assists.
Sydorko, (A-): Sydorko played a really strong game all around. He shot the ball very well, corralled 14 rebounds, and had four blocks.
Dustin, (B+): Dustin had a solid game, as he finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and three steals.
Cheese, (B): Cheese had a good game as well, as he scored 10 points off the bench, and added two steals.
Commentary by ZAK & JERRY... Hopp on the Yates Train 67 Dojo Volume 63: Catch the fucking ball Evan 59 Yates and Co too much for Mazz and Kodraless Dojo We got the Dojo VS Hopp on the Yates train. Interesting match ups but I liked the DOJO heading into this one as I saw issues with stopping Mazz. But… womp womp Mazz and Kodra don’t show. Yates train is fully staffed.
To the game:
Frankly, this game should have been a blow out. Without Mazz and Kodra, Dojo is missing their best scorer and best defender. However, Rakusin came out firing with his best Mazz impression and was able to actually take a 16-14 lead with 9:00 to go in the 1st half.
The last lead of the game for Dojo was about 5:45 to play in the 1st when they took at 19-18 lead on another Rakusin 3.
But once Rakusin got a little cold from deep, the offense totally stalled and Yates and company began to take over. Yates, Hopp and Nate tag teamed to take a 30-23 lead at the half.
There were probably 15 missed 3s in the 1st half by Dojo. And maybe 5 of them being airballs.
To my surprise, Dojo came out fighting again in the second half on some Tobi 3s, steals and layups to pull to within 1 with 16:30 to play 33-34.
In the next 4:40 seconds, Yates and Company went on a 16-3 run. Andy had 2 consecutive pretty coast to coast takes during this stretch which really sparked the team.
Dojo made a late push with a couple minutes left with back to back 3s for Tobi and Rakusin but it wasn’t enough as Yates and Company pulled out an 8 point victory.
MVP: Yates – 18 points 14 rebounds. Can’t complain about that. Did what was needed as the big to give his team the decided win.
LVP: Mazz for not showing up.
Enter the Lyon's Den 55 Back at it like a mutherfuckin crack addict 56 Lyon goes out in a Whimper In game 2 we had Enter the Lyon’s Den taking on Ruff’s long team name.
No Heller for Ruff and no Harry for Lyon. With Heller out, Lyon’s Den should have a pretty easy go at it.
To the Game.
Well, I was wrong. This game was a back and forth battle with a lot of lead changes. With some close losses by Ruff already this season, I saw a potential choke job coming but they were able to play some lock down defense and pull out a very hard fought victory.
Grades:
MVP - Brob – A : Picking up the slack offensively for Jack being missing, Brob put up a solid 19 points which is far more than I expect from this defensive specialist.
Bryce: B+: Did a solid job out there. His length was a factor and did put up 10 and 3.
Ruff: B+: Solid outing for Ruff. 15 points with 3 3s. I’ll take that.
Jared: A-: Doing exactly what his team needs which was the Al Horford treatment. 12 points, 11 boards and 5 assists. Altho throwing in 2 highlight blocks to round out his great day.
Losers: Grades: Lyon: C : Lyon has underperformed so far this season. Maybe he is playing to his level but the expectations were higher. Still getting used to Wall Ball, I see him continuing to improve. However in this game, Lyon should of done a lot more. 19 and 11 won’t cut it for the #1 overall pick.
Seyi : B- : 12 and 9 for Seyi. Needed another 8 points out of Seyi.
Seun: B: 16, 4, 3 and 2. Pretty solid overall game for Seun. But you lose to a Hellerless Ruff team, you can’t get a good grade.
Gerry: B: 8 points for Gerry is good but when you play 40 minutes, that is about what I expect.
Stop Drop And Roll Me a J 64 Lambda Epsilon Omega 60 SDARMJ holds off LEO Stop Drop And Roll Me a J, jumped all over Lambda Epsilon Omega in the first half. It looked as though LEO wasn’t going to have an answer for SDARMJ, but they did, and almost completed a huge comeback. SDARMJ was able to hold off LEO 64-60. LEO captain Dustin Williams kicked off the scoring with a make from deep, which gave his team an early 3-0 lead, (at 19:30 mark). Zak got SDARMJ on the scoreboard, as he scored from inside the paint, (2-3 at 19:00 mark). Cheese then scored from inside the post for LEO, (5-4 at 17:00 mark). From that point, SDARMJ started to seize control of the game. SDARMJ went on a 20-6 run, a run that took over 12 minutes to complete. Zak was a big part of this run, as he scored 10 of the 20 points. Ghost also drilled two midrange jumpers, and the run was capped off when Zak found Jeff Steiner cutting to the basket for an easy layup, (24-11 at 5:00 mark). LEO finally put an end to the run, when Dustin hit a midrange jumper, (13-24 at 4:10 mark). After the LEO bucket, SDARMJ finished the final four minutes of the first half on a 16-8 run. The run was started when EJ hit a straight away three, (27-13 at 3:50 mark). Steiner followed with a fast break layup off a steal from Zak, (29-13 at 3:20 mark). Zak then connected on a straight away three of his own, (32-15 at 2:30 mark). The SDARMJ run was finished off by a Steiner three right before the halftime buzzer sounded, (40-21 at halftime). SDARMJ opened the second half the same way they ended the first, with a three-point make, this time by Alan Orellana, (43-21 at 19:50 mark). Cheese answered for LEO, as he scored a fast-break layup off a SDARMJ turnover, (23-43 at 19:00 mark). Both teams traded baskets during the next six minutes of play, (50-30 at 13:00 mark). LEO would finally respond, as they started to mount their comeback after a timeout. Out of the timeout, LEO went on a quick 8-0 run. Matt Meservey started the LEO run with a layup off a cut, (32-50 at 12:50 mark), and ended the run with a midrange jumper, (38-50 at 11:40 mark). SDARMJ put a stop to the run when Zak hit a floater in the lane, (52-38 at 11:30 mark). LEO answered with a Meservey three, (41-52 at 10:30 mark). EJ then responded for SDARMJ, as he converted a put-back, (54-41 at 10:20 mark). LEO answered with a 6-0 run, that begun with two Mike Sydorko makes at the charity stripe, (43-54 at 9:00 mark). Sydorko then scored off an offensive rebound, and the run was capped off by two more Sydorko free throws, (47-54 at 6:30 mark). SDARMJ put an end to this run when Zak converted an unorthodox reverse layup, (56-47 at 6:00 mark). Just over three minutes later, Ghost made a put-back for SDARMJ, which increased their lead to 10, (60-50 at 2:45 mark). It looked as though SDARMJ was in the clear, but LEO did not give up. LEO went on a 5-1 run, as Meservey drilled one from deep at the 1:20 mark, (55-61). SDARMJ closed out the game from the free throw line, and held off a furious second half run by LEO. Leading the way for SDARMJ was Zak. He did a great job getting all his teammates involved (9 assists), while scoring a team-high 23 points, and corralled 13 rebounds. Ghost was as solid as a rock per usual, as he netted 16 points, and grabbed 12 rebounds. EJ had another strong showing, as he finished the game with eight points. Alan and Steiner supplied great energy and intensity on both sides of the floor. Jon Daley had a rather quiet game, as he finished with seven points, and six rebounds. Leading the second half surge for LEO was Sydorko, as he recorded a monster double-double, (23 points and 17 rebounds). He also added a game-high four blocks. Meservey had a great second half, as he scored 12 of his 16 points in the half. Cheese just missed a double-double, (10 points and 9 rebounds). A strong showing from Dustin, (11 points and 9 rebounds).
