Well they did it
Middle Aged Magic 89 AND 1 78
Final game of the season featured the # 1 seed AND 1 versus the # 2 seed Middle Aged Magic. And 1 was missing their leading rebounder and pick setter Mike Cook. MAM was missing a key contributor in Billy Jackson. Not to take anything away from Billy buy I’d say this definitely hurt AND 1 more.
It was pretty evident early as MAM held a 25-16 lead with about 11 minutes left in the half. Although AND 1 struggled to connect on their three point shooting (5-17) (MAM was 4-11) they still managed to score at the rim and played ok enough defense to make this thing a game. At the half MAM was up 42-39. Just look at the balance by the starters from MAM:
Kariuki Thande 8 pts, 1 stl, 1 oreb, 5 drebs and 4 asts
Eric Bonvie 10 pts (2-5 from three and 0-1 from the free throw line), 1 stl, 4 drebs and 2 asts
Matt Taliaferro 12 pts, 1 stl, 3 blks, 2 orebs, 8 drebs and 3 asts
Brian Quinn 12 pts (2-3 from three), 1 stl, 1 oreb, 1 dreb and 1 ast.
On the opposite side the stats on the starters for AND 1 looked pretty good too:
Jon Waters 16 pts (2-4 from three and 2-2 from the free throw line), 2 stls, 1 oreb, 5 drebs and 1 ast
Matt Fermon 16 pts (3-13 from three ans 1-2 from the free throw line), 2 stls, 1 blk, 6 drebs and 2 asts
Alex Sherman-Ash 4 pts, 1 stl, 1 blk, 2 orebs, 2 drebs
Stephen Piasta 5 pts, 1 oreb, 4 drebs and 1 ast.
Second half is where MAM started to pull away. AND 1 was still trying to connect on 3-point shots (4-21) while not only did MAM shoot much better (5-11), Kariuki was getting to the rim (also a career high from three 1-2) at will while Matt had the midrange game working. Not to mention Eric was stroking the hell out of the three ball. Final score 89-78 MAM wins. Congratulations to Kariuki on winning the first ever Saturday league championship. He also took home co-MVP honors with Matt. Matt didn’t believe Kariuki’s points scored but give your captain props man and stop hating. Tough loss for Jon Waters and the AND 1 crew but the good thing he is back and so are most of his team members so next season you never know what can happen. See everyone soon.
