Press leads the Rock to the coveted Golden 40oz
The Situation 62 Yacht Rock 68
As CAC’s most elite 4vs4 league, the SML and the Golden 40oz are CAC’s most prized championship and Situation was looking to defend their title. The league has only seen 2 champions and Situation was hoping to keep it that way. However Yacht Rock has some seasoned veterans on the team, guys who have won multiple championships. With all this talent and experience, we were expecting quiet the fight.
Well it didn’t start out that way. YR came out blazing with crisp ball movement which led to easy open looks. Surprisingly, Mazz (17/8) abandoned the 3Ball early and attacked the basket with an array of predictable post moves. I guess when you’ve known him as long as I have, you seem him every once in a while take it down low so I wasn’t surprised with the moves. However Sit appeared as though they hadn’t seen it before and were utterly surprised by his work. Building a 30-17 lead YR looked like they were going to cruise much in part because Sit just had no flow. There was no ball movement and everyone just seemed to watch the other try and take someone one on one. This led to YR holding a 39-20 lead at halftime and things looked bleak for Sit.
In the second half things didn’t start any easier for Sit because Press (30/17) was just doin’ work and not just on the offensive end either. Press really held Ian (20/14) in check and didn’t let that patented mid range game get going. However, Ian isn’t a star for nothing and despite being forced to work harder than any game this season, he finally found a way to get the ball in the basket. His energy started to feed to the rest of the group and the defense stepped up. Slowly Sit chipped into that 20+ point lead. With 6 minutes to go Jim (17/14) hit a 3 to cut the lead to 3, but Press answered with another 3 to never let the lead get any closer. That shot right there clinched the MVP for Press but his heroics weren’t over there. In the closing minutes, Sit had several occasions to get even closer but couldn’t convert from the FT line and in the final minute missed 3 of 4 attempts. Meanwhile, Press calmly stepped up to the line and buried his attempts.
It was too little too late for Sit and without that slow start who knows what would have happened. The good news is they’ve already committed for next season and I’m glad to see them back. YR will take a season off, but have no fear, many of them are coming back in a more impressive form. I can’t wait for next season!!
