Winter 2010: SML League Champs: Cold Blooded

Cold Blooded remains the only champion the SML has ever seen
Tiger Style 63 Cold Blooded 69

The SML has been around for two season’s now, even introducing a new trophy (the Golden 40oz) and have seen an infusion of new talent but one thing remains constant throughout our growth, Cold Blooded is the best and only champion this leagues every seen. It was a valiant effort from Tiger Style but they just couldn’t find an answer for JHend and the rest of the team.

Right from the start JHend (27 pts) was on feeling it. With this being his last game at CAC for the foreseeable future, the man wanted to put on a show and remind everyone who this crafty lefty is.  He was pulling from everywhere on the floor and scoring at will. Despite TS best efforts, they just couldn’t slow him down. Holding a 7 point lead (45-38), it appeared CB had this game in hand but TS wasn’t about to give up and found a way to claw back in the second half. TS made several runs in the second half behind TSmith (17 pts) & Scotty (17 pts) and even cut CB’s lead to 1 (53-52). They had several chances to take the lead and just find a way  to convert. A couple of big shots late from Josh (17 pts) and some late FT’s by captain Nim eventually sealed the deal. Cold Blooded retains their title owning once again the SML and creating a dynasty. They have already committed to next season in an effort to reach legendary status by gaining a 3-peat. For TS, it is yet to be determined if they’re coming back next season but I am sure if they do, once again they’ll be a title contender.

It was another great season for us here in the SML and hopefully next season we see even more new faces and teams as we continue to grow. Thank you to the 10 teams that joined us this season, ref Dan for once again working the league with me and to everyone else who helped out along the way (and you know who you are). This league can’t succeed without you guys and it is my pleasure week in and week out in making this a fun and entertaining league. See you all next season!!

    Hungover 5  DeLiotte Globetrotters 2

    Hungover wins, DeLiotte doesnt show..again!!!

No one loves the 9:40 game, but we get up anyways (some may not even got to bed) and give it a go. Hungover despite missing some of their players managed to get 4 guys for their game and came ready to play. That’s more that can be said for DeLiotte who for the second time this season could not get enough guys to the game. In fact they actually got no-one to the game. This is certainly disappointing and hopefully this doesn’t happen again. This will certainly be reviewed by the league as the playoffs are right around the corner.

CACmore secures number one seed in the playoffs with this win

Much of the season Jimmy D from the IceCats has been mentioned as the potential regular season MVP, but I think it’s time to throw another name into the debate. Another short handed game for CACmore (no Billy or Mixtape) and another monster performance by the Stallion. Right from the start, O’Cal (38 pts, 8 3’s) was on point and hitting everything he threw up. He got to the basket at will and was just lights out from down town.  He carried the offensive load for CACmore in the first half, while Pork Chops (who’s fighting for their playoff lives) had good balance across the board. Despite the Pork Chop balance, CACmore had a 41-36 half time lead.

With all the focus on O’Cal in the second half, he deferred his shots to get his guys open looks. Filosa (18 pts, 19 reb) was crushing it down low and as usual, Cheese (18 pts) was his crafty self around the basket. However you can’t discount a team fighting for their playoff lives and TJ (38 pts, 16 reb) was just on fire in the second half and CACmore had no answer for him. He was hitting his midrange game, getting to the basket and unconscious from deep. He wasn’t the lone guy scoring for Pork Chops though as Paul N (18 pts) got on his roll. As we’ve seen before, when he’s cold, he can’t hit anything, but when that man gets hot…..watch out. Down 3 (70-67) Pork Chops just couldn’t hit enough late shots to cut into that lead. CACmore hit their ft’s and with this win locked up the number one seed for the playoffs. Pork Chops loses another close game and are on the brink of elimination. Without a win next week they have no shot so they’ll need to take care of business and hope for some help.

Tiger Style 88  Cold Blooded 93

Cold Blooded wins the track meet but Tiger Style covers the spread

With the highest spread in SML league history, Tiger Style was up against some of the toughest odds (50 pt line) today. Not only was TS missing TSmith, but I decided to make my triumphant return to the court. Yes, after 6 long weeks, I’m back out there making terrible passes, shooting too much and watching guys go right by me. Oh, it’s so good to be back…..I’m sure they were thrilled. Anyways, it was clear defense wasn’t going to be played by either of these teams as we started chucking right from the tip.  As usual, JHend (35 pts, 15 reb) was just working from all spots on the floor. He was able to get to the rim, and his J was ridiculous. And when he wanted to give up the rock, he had Wachtel (29 pts) giving TS fits from inside and out. Sure we scored 47 points in the first half, but gave up 55, which is never the recipe for success.

In the second half, the D picked up a bit and TS was able to cut into that lead thanks to some stellar play by Scotty (26 pts, 16 reb) and DRuff (28 pts) and as the game was winding down we had two shots to tie or take the lead in the closing minute. This was a tough one, and has created a 4 team tie for 3rd place in the standings. It appears these 4 teams will play each other in the opening round of the playoffs, hopefully the tie breakers won’t be too complicated to figure out. It’s not the return I was looking for, but at least we covered the spread.

AMN punches ticket to the big dance with this win

AMN punches ticket to the big dance with this win

We all join the league in hopes to make the big dance and the game between AMN and W&H was one that had HUGE playoff implications. A win by W&H volts themselves right back into the playoff race while AMN could assure themselves a shot at the title. This game started out back and forth as the star from each team stepped up big. And speaking of “big”, Big Mike (30 pts, 17 reb) was just killing it and came out super aggressive. On the other side Evan (28 pts, 14 reb) was abusing guys and W&H just had no answer for him. Tied at half (32 a piece) this game looked to be a nail biter but AMN came out strong out of the break and jumped out to a lead, one that reached as high as 12 points. While W&H were trying to figure out how to slow down Evan, Steven (18 pts) and Charlie (15 pts) were able to get some easy looks. But it wouldn’t be a W&H game if I they didn’t make a run in the second half and that’s exactly what they did. John (12 pts), who’s been struggling the last couple of weeks, was able to get to the basket and create some space for others. Although W&H made several runs, they just weren’t able to get over the hump and close the gap. This win by AMN has clinched a playoff spot for them (the 7th seed) and will likely give them a first round matchup against Situation. For W&H, a tough season nearly comes to an end, but we saw some good things from them. They’re playing for pride and stat padding next week.

The Situation 71  Worcester IceCats 63

Situation gets an impressive win and gains the inside track to the #2 seed

With only 2 weeks left before the playoffs there were still some playoff positioning to take care of and the IceCats still had a shot at a number one seed. All they had to do was win out and hope for one more CACmore loss. This wasn’t going to be easy but you new that Jimmy D and his crew were going to give it all they had. Well it started with Foley (23 pts) scoring the first 11 points for the Cats. Things weren’t easy for Situation as they went 1-14 from downtown and finished with 2 total 3’s for the first half. Despite the poor shooting, Situation was able to keep the Cats halftime lead to 1 (31-30). Much of this had to do with Jimmy B (28 pts) shaking off the poor outside shooting and taking it to the rack.

In the second half, with the game going back and forth, the two stars finally decided to shine. Bobby C (17 pts, 6 blks) was crushing it from all over the floor and MVP candidate Jimmy D (27 pts, 15 reb) put up another monster game. The game continued to go back and forth but a couple of missed opportunities for the Cats gave Situation just enough room to take a lead and hold the lead. The win all but assures Situation with the number #2 in the playoffs (although it’s not a guarantee yet) while Cats are now in a 4 way tie for the 3rd seed. Next weeks game will determine much of the playoff seeding and give me a headache trying to figure it out.
