Winter 2013: Sunday Morning League Champs: DangerZone

    What a game.
    Danger Zone 56 KCCO 54

I will be the first to admit, I never expected to see these two teams in the finals.  Maybe one team but KCCO has had an impressive playoff run.  Today with only 4 guys in attendance and missing their leading scorer, they will try to be only the second team in CAC history to win a title after finishing the regular season with a losing record.  Danger Zone on the other side had 6 guys and was also missing their leading scorer but with the experience factory and depth on their side had a huge advantage in this one.

Like they had done all playoffs, KCCO was not afraid of the moment matching score for score and miss for miss with DZ.  With about 9 minutes left in the half DZ went on a run off the strong play of Jimmy D 9 pts, 1 blk, 2 drebs and 1 ast and was up 18-12.  KCCO was not even close to done though.  Getting contributions from everyone Christ Conant and Billy Murray both connected on 2 triples each, Matt Stone was filling the stat sheet with 4 pts, 1 stl, 1 blk and 1 dreb but if KCCO is to win or be in any game it’s due to their main guy Sean Courtney.  Sean was having another great all around game with 7 pts, 3 stls, 1 blk, 1 oreb, 9 drebs and 5 asts.  On the flip side Matt Maloney known more so for defense was contributing to Danger Zone mostly with his scoring with 9 pts, 1 stl and 2 drebs.  On defense Matt Connelly was having a block party with 5.  At the half KCCO was up 27-26 and looked prime for the upset.

In the second half no team was ever able to gain any real momentum.  DZ did however take the lead back at the 13:41 mark 35-33.  When I say this game was back and forth it was literally back and forth.  Christ added 2 more threes for KCCO but was match by Mike Cadman for DZ.  Bobby C for DZ started to pick up his offensive for DZ but Sean Courtney never stopped.  With 5 minutes left DZ was still up in a close one at 45-43.  The real crucial moments of the game came off a 3-point make by Maloney and a little later on an open lay-up.  KCCO had an opportunity to tie at one point but opted for a three point shot in which they missed and did eventually score a lay-up at the end but lost 56-54.

KCCO had a great season.  I’ve heard they’ll be back in the fall session, which will be great for the league (and my team to get revenge).  Bobby C and company will be back to defend their title.  This victory marks the second title for the Danger Zone franchise.

MVP:  I decided to go with Matt Maloney.  Known primarily has a defender, Matt has consistently improved his offensive game and actually was the leading scorer and also led his team in steals.
