Winter 2009: Women’s 5v5 League Champs: Lady Ballers

We Be Ballin Anna the Bell of the Ball
Lady Ballers 72 Bayside Tigers 49

In a dominating team performance the Lady Ballers claimed this seasonís Womenís 5v5 Championship title lead by no other than Anna (ring that) Bell who was no doubt tonightís MVP. In honor and recognition of your outstanding play, Iíd like to invite you to come play in the 4v4 league this summer Tuesday nights @ the CAC.

Stellar team play and a refusal to back down defined the Lady Ballers victory. In the first half, they took off to a quick lead with multiple fast breaks aided by the thieving hands of Lydia, Downs and Deirdre. Pushing the ball fast and finding Bell proved effective in scoring points and exhausting the Tigers. Kandi dropped a few mid-rangers in the bank, assaulting the Tigers with quick pull-ups and Keri Downs bodied her way through the paint making good on an AND1.

The Tigers struggled. 4v4 League All-Stars Warder and The Lawless Monster must have tuckered themselves out from the showcases they put on Tuesday night. Warder was still able to hit some of her signature bombs, but Lawless had a respectively quiet night, typically outsized by none, Bell was able to give her a run for her money. Behind double-digits at the half, The Tigers came back into the second with a little more fight in them. Ellen exploded late in the game, virtually unable to miss, she racked up 13 points in the second, helping the Tigers sneak within 5 before they lost control of the game. Shout out to Erin Phillips a fellow ABír who suffered some tough luck with a bad ankle sprain. But they donít breed wimps back in A-Town, and like a true balla she bounced back aggressively in the second half. The Tigers fought hard, crashing the offensive glass and getting plenty of solid looks that they just couldnít put away. Of course, it didnít help that Annaís swatting palms were chomping at the bit to block any shot within her reach.

After allowing the Tigers to sneak within 5, the Ballers turned on the heat as Anna and Kandi blasted off combining for 24 of their teams 43 second half points. Annaís moves were smoother than Michael Jacksonís as she danced her way through the lane to copious buckets. Lydia also had a strong second half, providing the Ballers with plenty of options with her complete array of offensive threats.

Things got ugly as the Tigers ran out of steam, but to both teams it was a huge success to make it this far, the Tigers making leaps and bounds since their first appearance on the scene 3 seasons ago. I expect the competition to sizzle this summer and that the Ballers return to defend their title!!
